I own 21 UHD Blu-Rays. IMO the best I've seen is The Revenant, Sicario, and The Martian/Martian Extended Edition. I own a 4K tv with no HDR and these movies were still head and shoulders better than the Blu-Ray versions.

I'd say Revenant, The Martian (either version), and Batman v Superman are probably the best available right now. Just about everything else out now is a 2K upscale, which is only a marginal improvement over the 1080p release usually. Star Trek Into Darkness looks good if for no other reason than the IMAX footage and the HDR improvements, but still a 2K release...

I have to majorly disagree with the batman vs superman.

85% of the movie is a 2k upscale and it shows. only 30 minutes of the movie is true 4k. and a bulk of that comes AFTER the finale at the end. i thought man of steel overall consistently looked better, and thats a 2k upscale as well.

I'd wager you're wrong on your percentages, but not by a lot. I'd put it at closer to 40/60%. I'm not sure what the workflow was for doing the CG shots, but I can't help but feel like at least some of them composited the CG 2K into a 4K frame.

At any rate, I'd still put it far ahead of most other UHD releases which are literally 100% 2K upscaled, hence its inclusion in my list.

30 minutes of imax scenes. Movie is 182 minutes. I already did the math. Only 15% is true 4k, the rest is upscaled. The sharpness is nowhere near the top movies with 4k DIs such as Smurfs 2, revenant, sicario, or even the imax scenes of star trek 2. 30 minutes look great, but the other 150 minutes are very sub par.

Now I've heard everything. You people are the reason why they keep getting away with spoonfeeding us garbage quality, again and again.

Anyways OP, it's obviously The Smurfs 2 as that is the only one that was filmed and digitally mastered in 4K through its entire process. Shitty movie, amazing PQ.
So we're supposed to like Hancock because it was a 4K master? It's the worst one I've seen to date! This is an opinion thread, don't be a mean.

I thought both Ender's Game and P+P+Zs looked very clean and sharp with pretty decent colors. Ender's Game had a few scenes where the skin tones seemed off, but overall I was very happy with the PQ. As far as the films themselves, I enjoyed them. Neither to be taken too seriously.

I didn't do a BD to UHD comparison on these, so I can't say if they are worth an upgrade, but I did do the comparison with Deadpool and it was definite upgrade. See if you can find the UHD disk only on ebay to save a few bucks.

Consensus seems to be Revenant, with Deadpool making some noise. Wonder if BvS will crack the top now that triple-layer discs are on the market. Either way, I have all three, I just lack the hardware to enjoy them at the moment

Which disc has the best temporal resolution? I don't have equipment yet but I'm not convinced that the motion detail is as good at 50 Mbps 2160p as 35 Mbps 1080p. Those barebones Mastered in 4K discs from Sony seemed to glide right off the screen.

Out of the three that I own, I'm going to say The Revenant. I can't wait to see the Star Trek: Into Darkness IMAX scenes once I get it in 4K.

If they scanned the other footage at 4K, then it wouldn't simply be the IMAX scenes. Again, without knowing the workflow they used, it's hard to say specifically how much is actually 4K and how much is just 2K upscaled, but upon watching it three times I can say it's definitely more than 15%...

And I'll save you the trouble with Star Trek Into Darkness: it's a 2K DI, and it shows unfortunately. The HDR is a worthy upgrade though, and it still looks better than the BD.

I will be sincerely happy when we can get raw screenshots of movies for comparison purposes and put to rest this guessing/speculating.

Picture quality wise:

Smurfs 2; not a very good movie IMO (even my daughter refuses to watch it...lol) but it looks incredible in 4K.

Allegiant, Star Trek 1 & 2 look amazing as well.

My personal ranking of all UHD Blu-rays I've seen so far. I'm just rating the overall quality. Some are higher on the list because of resolution, others are higher because of great use of HDR.

The Revenant
Sicario
Deadpool
The Expandables 3 (I've had no problems with grayish blacks)
Amazing Spider-Man 2
Pineapple Express
The Martian
X-Men: Days of future past
Pride + Prejudice + Zombies
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (looks great for 16mm)
Independence Day
Star Trek
Joy
Kingsman - The Secret Service
Hancock
San Andreas
Maze runner
Maze runner: Scorch trials
The 5th wave
Ender's game

Revenant, sicario are close, but mostly filmed with 3.4k cameras.

Star Trek 2 also great.
Yes, but I have to get over the fact that I'm watching Smurfs 2.

Thats how disappointing BvS is, at no point do I think it beats the lowly 2k imax scenes of Star Trek 2. And yes I own around 35 4k blu rays so I have a pretty good idea of quality. Quite a few people share the same sentiment of BvS, so if it was anywhere near as good as u claim, it would be nearly unanimous like people's feelings towards the revenant, Sicario and Smurfs 2. I also haven't seen a single person say the imax scenes in ST2 WEREN'T amazing.

I also created/maintain the HDR master list over at avs last November, so I read quite a bit of feedback over all hdr sources including netflix, Amazon, vudu (which has dolby vision) in addition to 4k blu rays., you're welcome to check it out:

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but I'd take Hitman 47 over the first 2 1/2 hours of Batman v Superman. Hitman is super sharp with nice vibrant colors. I'd say the look of it is up there with Sicario.
