So it looks like Anchor Bay are now doing BD-Rs. Viral was just released this week and according to Amazon it is a BD-R. Hopefully other major studios don't take this route as well.

I see this eventually being the direction physical media may take several years from now. Unless something changes with how discs are created and the costs/required orders come down, this could be a potential future we face. I'm 50/50 on this. On one hand, if it wasn't for the BD-R it may never have gotten a US release, so I'm ok with this if it means everything is released on a physical product with cover, menu, special features, etc. On the other hand it seems ridiculous that studios couldn't print the minimum 1000 units (or preferably more) and then rely on the BD-R route for subsequent "pressings" if more were needed for films like this were purchase totals won't likely be very high.

If this means we get more niche releases on BD that aren't going to sell well then who gives a shit if it's a burned or pressed disc? It's something we wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
The disc is just a means to an end of getting a digital copy of the movie ripped to my file server's hard drive anyway. It's pointless how high quality the disc is as long as my computer's Blu-ray drive is capable of reading all of the data off it once. Actually watching a movie off a disc? How... primitive. |

but I agree I don't see any major films hitting a BD-R disc. Sadly I think they will have poor sales for just about any BD-R they release. Can only imagine how bad the quality would be. |

BD-R's are a viable choice and quality won't be a concern whatsoever with the presentation of the film. Compatibility could become an issue for some folks (Xbox One) and longevity could be different (or it may be the same, we really don't know), unless you flip the disc over you'll never know the difference in that regard. My concern would come from the likelihood that failure rates could go up, but that's purely speculation on my part. If it get's niche films to market in "complete" packages it's better than the alternative... no physical release.

DVDs are different than Blu-rays. To put a film without any clean up on to a DVD is one thing - and burn on demand. To go through the process of having a Blu-ray master done is another - and that is where the costs lie. Plus a manufactured disc will last longer - the cost savings only hurts the consumer in the long run

That said, since BD-Rs do not use a dye like DVD recordable, they are expected to last up to 150 years. They also have the same scratch resistant coating. I don't expect to live another 50 years so it would be OK with me **IF** the choice was that or no movie or Tv show at all. Last edited by pmil; 08-04-2016 at 08:13 PM. |

BD-Rs do seem way more durable than DVD-Rs, so there's nothing to worry about.
That said, most BD-R releases are dedicated to real junk or have transfers that are rather junk. However, I don't think that's necessarily the case with these Anchor Bay BD-Rs. |

I can't get behind these, either. I've noticed more and more creeping into the site, and it's really starting to tick me off. If I wanted to buy BD-R discs, I can buy them in bundles and make them at home. This kind of media is totally pointless for selling commercial product on, and I wish the BDA would remove it from the equation for commercial releases entirely. I've tried to reconcile it in my head, and I simply can't. I buy the argument that I might not be able to tell the difference without looking, but that isn't the reason I own physical media in the first place.
The ridiculous quotas for replicating also need to take a hike, too. This is clearly the only reason that commercial product is ever sold on duplicated discs in the first place. Never mind the fact that cases, jackets, and even lossless audio codecs and even sometimes subtitling has been bought and paid for, irrespective of whether the actual product is burned or not. If major studios are so desperate to duplicate 500 discs, then they should be replicating 250, selling out, and replicating 250 again, not "forced" to replicate 1000 from the start. Even moreso than DVD-R, BD-R is clearly not any kind of savior format, either, so the argument that certain titles wouldn't be on "Blu-ray" if not for BD-Rs doesn't really hold water, especially on such a universal format. Instead, it seems to be a convenient way for a few labels to control stock on titles, which turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy when stock moves online-only, and at a snail's pace, due, in part, to being a BD-R in the first place. Besides which, if duplicated discs work so well, they would have taken over home video long ago, irrespective of large-scale quantities. I just hope that we never, ever see this on UHD BD. I want to know that if I buy something sold as a UHD BD, I receive a replicated disc, every time. Let these coasters die with 1080p Blu-ray, please. |
