The resolution of the actual motion picture image area (not the black bars) will change/increase during the IMAX bits.

If the IMAX bits are on the disc at 1.78:1 they will be using the entire 1920x1080 for the moving picture image. For the rest, if 2.35:1, it will only be using around 1920x817 for the resolution of the moving picture area, the rest being made up of pure black bars.

Also, IMAX has higher resolution to 35mm film so the resolution (amount of detail in the scenes) may look higher on those scenes on Blu-ray even without the use of more screen pixels (that full 1.78:1 encodes use).
