PCM is uncompressed.

The issue with the Xbox one is Atmos and DTS:X and a mapping issue for 5.1 content.

The claim in that article that there is no sound when playing a standard blu-ray is not true.

Thank you for addressing that issue, I was worried about that.

Seems like PS3/PS4/X1 all have similar audio options.

No problem. I was pretty playstation loyal, but when they announced that they were coming out with a "4.5" to play 4k I completely balked at the idea. And then Xbox came out with theirs first, so i decided "why not" and to go ahead and get the X1s, because it's not just a minor upgrade it's a whole new system. And now it'll be my primary movie player because it does upgrade the picture quality well.

So sony pioneering the decision to do a new system so fast just made a loyal sony buyer now have an xbox too.

I do not buy that MS will get native audio codec bitstreaming working. They didn't on the last version either.
Albert Penello said that they are working on it and it WILL BE released as an update. I can't see them backtracking on that.

I'll believe it when I see it. This is MS we're talking about.

In terms of the XB1 S it is a minor upgrade, not a whole new system. The "Scorpio" will be the whole new system for the Xbox.

Well, I meant I already have a ps4 - so getting the Neo would have been a minor upgrade. Getting an xb1s is more appealing because now I'll have access to exclusive Xbox games. So it's an entirely new system to me.

I just put the same movie in my xb1s and ps4 and swapped between Inputs on my tv (I bought the trilogy of Jurassic park and bought the 3D version, which has the standard bluray in it so I had two copies). There's definitely some up pretty decent upconversion happening

Now I'm torn. I will have the ability as early as Monday to go buy one of these, but the only one available is the 2TB version. But the 500GB bundle with Halo is only 2 weeks ago.

what to do, what to do

Ps3 and Ps4 both can do Bitstream over HDMI and both support Atmos

Get the Philips or the Samsung. The Xbox isn't worth it as a UHD Blu-ray player.

This thread specifically stated it was about getting an Xbox S as a disc player. I'm saying there are better regular players if you're going to do that. And they bitstream too.

besides the bitstream, which is coming in a future update, how are the other players any better? Where are the reviews and head to head comparisons? The Xbox One s is a lot more future proof than current players. It has much better hardware.

Again, we are talking about Microsoft. I don't trust them. If it one day starts bitstreaming via a firmware update, that's great.

But something tells me if they could do it, they would have already had that working at launch and not as an afterthought.

I do understand being cautious cause its Microsoft, but they have mostly delivered with Xbox One updates. Blu-Ray 3D and bitstream Dolby digital/DTS were added with updates, along with countless other features that the system did not have at launch. I don't believe there is any hardware limitation to adding bitstream lossless and it was stated that it was definitely coming. If Atmos/DTS support is the reason for holding off or buying another player, I understand, but it it seems to do everything else fairly well, and at a great price.

I'm the first to admit that I find audio much more confusing than video.

I already see Bitstream as an option in Xbox setup videos, so there's more than one kind?

Also, I've read the PS3 has significant audio limits when playing 3D, which I do frequently.

PS4 seems to have far fewer settings, so I never thought it was really fully featured either.

As far as Atmos goes, I'm amazed that any console supports it.
