Conspiracy theory mode.

Nvidia cancelled there shield follow up tablet, Nintendo using tegra chips, nx is the shield follow up but now Nintendo branded.

I wonder if the NX will be anything like this?

Quote:
Around this time in 2014, NVIDIA unveiled the SHIELD Tablet, and then refreshed the device as the Tablet K1 at a lower price point in late 2015. Back in May, we brought you the report that an FCC filing for a possible 2016 follow-up to the Tablet K1 had leaked. Among some possible measurements, we could only tell that the device was codenamed “P2290W,” that it was simply called a “Shield Tablet” in the filing documents, and that it would ship with 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

Furthermore, a poster on the NVIDIA forums claimed to have seen a mention of the device in the code for NVIDIA’s Android TV, citing it is as “Hawkeye.” He stated that “Hawkeye” had a Tegra X1 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and 1920x1200 for a screen resolution.

Since that leak, things have been pretty silent. However, according to a dismissal request letter submitted to the FCC by NVIDIA, the follow-up to the SHIELD Tablet K1 has been cancelled. In the letter, NVIDIA’s Compliance Engineering Manager claims that the reason for the dismissal request and cancellation of the product is “business reasons.” Perhaps NVIDIA has noted the declining tablet sales across the market, and has decided instead to focus their efforts elsewhere.

If so, then maybe not all hope for an addition to the SHIELD family is lost. We have not heard much on the Bluetooth and WiFi certifications that appeared for the rumored device codenamed “P2523,” believed to be a follow-up to the original Shield Portable, that appeared earlier this year. That filing is still listed as active at the FCC.

To recap, back in March, Chinese Android news site Juggly reported that they spotted a new entry for something called “SHIELD Portable” on the Bluetooth Special Interest Group certification listing. Following that, Liliputing spotted a SHIELD Portable on the Wi-Fi Alliance Certification site. Device “P2523” is listed as having 2.4GHz/5GHz AC WiFi (the original SHIELD Portable did not have AC Wi-Fi), as well as running “Android version 5.”

While certification listings do not prove that a device will ever hit the consumer market, it does shine a bit of hope for those who enjoy the SHIELD line of devices.

detachable buttons are so stupid. I dont get why those arent built into the thing for a one piece console. I can imagine those things getting lost and/or breaking

It was mentioned in the first leak that the controller was detachable to let you play on the TV as well as on the console. I would guess is cheaper to make a tablet without controls built in?

Who knows, I also remember a while back that Nintendo would be one of the first to use that new free form display tech which allows manufacturers to produce non traditional display designs, i.e. Not limited to traditional square or rectangular shapes.

Why though? That doesnt make sense to me. I dont see how having the buttons built into the handheld prevents this. Too many unnecessary parts which makes it less convenient than it should be. Imagine thinking you have your NX with you but forgot the buttons at home? Or losing them while out?

I don't know, I can only guess if they actually aren't built in then it could be because the device needs to dock with a station to display on the TV so you would need a separate controller anyway.

That's funny.

So I don't know now judging by that patent wether side a will play as player 1 & b player 2.

If not, they better make the detachable(s) sold seperately after launch.

I think it's just another way Nintendo is trying to appeal to the mobile/tablet market. By making the controls modular, it allows that crowd to use the device as a straight up tablet and play the games that are touch screen interfaced (ala Pokémon Go). If they're not interested in using it to play traditional games, they can detach the controllers and just carry it around like a tablet. I think it's pretty neat actually.

Potentially Nintendo has created a device that has appeal to all types of gamers. Whether you're a casual mobile/tablet gamer who uses touch screen or a long time hand-held mobile gamer or an at home console gamer, this device will cover all 3 types of gaming. Pretty damn cool if you think about it.

Agreed (if all this ends up being true). Their main concern otherwise would be to not pick a shitty name and to properly market what the device actually is (and have Mario alongside Zelda at launch.)

I think they should just call it the "Nintendo Go." I think it's simple, it fits, and makes sense. It completely summarizes just what the machine is, especially if the rumors are true that Nintendo's driving message is going to be taking your experiences "on the go.". Then they can name all of their IP's that way like with Pokémon Go. They can have Mario Kart Go, Metroid Go, Star Fox Go, etc.

The only issue with that is that "Go" wouldn't make one immediately think of a machine that plays at home as well.

the thing is having controls on it does not prevent it from being able to be used as a tablet. Besides its a handheld...how big are you expecting this thing to be? It cant be tablet size. It needs to be small, light and comfortable to be held in both hands for longer stretches than a few minutes. They'll also need to keep the portability aspect of it so they cant get crazy with size. I dont see this being as big as an iPad mini for example. It'll likely be comparable to a Vita and 3DS XL.

I think it's the aesthetic that Nintendo is going for. Mobile/casuals are already used to the simple look of a tablet. You start adding buttons and analogue sticks then suddenly it doesn't look like a tablet anymore. It looks like a toy.

As far as size goes, I have no idea but ideally I'd say without attachments it would be somewhere in the neighborhood of a Galaxy Note on the low end (5.7") and a Kindle Fire on the high end (7"). And why can't it be tablet sized? People carry tablets around all the time.

not in their pockets. Tablets are less portable than a traditional handheld. They also are held differently. When I use my iPad, Im usually resting it on something, whether its my lap or surface. My phone (or PSP when I used it) was held freely in the air which I find more comfortable and natural for gaming, bc it is held like a gamepad would be

Oh boy, this is from a bigger "leak" of Pokemon Sun and Moon info but NX related
  • The NX will be a dual handheld/console set for release next year. Sept 2017 there will be a parent game that features both regions of XYSM exclusive to this console.

Please be true
