Since MGM was bought-out, MGM does not have a department to handle this as it was absorbed by Sony & Fox. Sony does new release titles with Fox doing all catalogue titles. I have been pleased with how is has been going since many good special editions have come from MGM/Fox since the Sony aquisition. I must admit that it is very odd that Sony called on Fox to release MGM titles for them. I guess Fox just has better ties/larger DVD manufacturing facilities, who knows. Just odd that they're bedfellows here.

Yes, they absolutely did. I have all of the 2-discers released last year, so I will not be getting the blu-rays unfortunately. Other great Fox/MGM Special Editions as of late are Child's Play, Pumpkinhead, 12 Angry Men, Misery, The Graduate, Casino Royale (67).

Another thing about the MGM/Sony/Fox thing is that Sony DID start releasing catalogue MGM titles right after they got MGM, but stopped shortly thereafter. Titles they released were The Producers: Deluxe Edition, Some Like It Hot: 2-Disc SE, and were about to release a 2-disc of A Fish Called Wanda... and produced the product even, but recalled it due to a new contract that allowed Fox to release the older titles. The Sony version of A Fish Called Wanda is incredibly rare since a bunch of copies were actually shipped.

Before Sony bought MGM, Fox also handled their releases. The other partners didn't like Sony having so much control, so it was returned to the neutral third party. The level of involvement can be just shipping discs (Fox does this for Anchor Bay last I checked), to handling all aspects of production (MGM)

It costs a lot of money to maintain your own distribution, and unless you have other companies using you, it's often not worth it

DreamWorks did, and once again have a similar arrangement with Universal

It's been a bit of a tricky thing trying to sort out all the studios involved when it comes to MGM, especially Bond. But here's the basic way to look at it:

Die Another Day and before: Produced by MGM (and UA), Released by Fox

Casino Royale and after: Produced by Sony and MGM, Released by Sony

Kinda helps also that it can easily be said that anything in the Die Another Day and before (Fox releases) catagory is part of one series of Bond films, while Casino Royale and after (Sony) are another.

As for which I prefer, I think Sony is probably the second best studio in terms of quality (just behind Disney, simply cause I own more Disney ones), while Fox is a bit behind.
