I wonder how significant the upgrade in quality will be for Rayearth. I have the remastered DVDs after giving the original complete set to my sister and am hesitant about upgrading for a second time. Same with Fatal Fury. I just bought the OVA and movies maybe a few months ago. Can anyone vouch for how good the quality of Discotek BD releases are? I don't even recall Fatal Fury getting a JP BD release.

I might be wrong, but I think the only Discotek title people complain about is Blue Submarine No. 6. |

Still around if you are desperate ...
https://www.amazon.co.jp/宇& https://www.amazon.co.jp/宇& https://www.amazon.co.jp/宇& https://www.amazon.co.jp/宇& They are not the limited editions that came with the slips. I only have the slips for volumes 5-7 for sale. But I do have cases 1-7 (they don't have "Star Blazers" logo, but obviously the original Japanese name) for the Japanese sets with booklets available. I bought the last Yamato 2199 film which was an Amazon Exclusive that came with a digipak box, and that's where I store all my Yamato 2199 discs now. |

Going strictly off the Discotek DVD of FF: The Motion Picture, it's clear they used a new HD master. The DVD is super clear, crisp, and gorgeous. I seem to recall Discotek being involved in the remaster or helped encourage the creation of a new HD master. They were posting periodic updates of the new restoration for about a year or so before their DVD release. When Discotek first licensed it, there was no anamorphic release of the film, not even in Japan. The Discotek DVD was sold as (at the time it came out) the very first anamorphic widescreen release of the film. Discotek even boasted about this at the time it came out (in late 2014) and Masami Obari even tweeted about the DVD release saying he wished it came out in Japan. Speaking of which, Discotek has surprised at times with a few of their releases. Their Locke the Superman DVD was also the only anamorphic version worldwide, and it was restored as well. At the time Discotek released Locke on DVD, Japan was still stuck with their old 2000 DVD which is letterboxed and unremastered. (I don't know if Japan has gotten their own version yet of the restored Locke since the Discotek release in 2012) ![]() So yeah, there's always the possibility that Discotek could beat Japan to the punch with something, like an actual true HD BD release of something that Japan doesn't yet have wouldn't be completely impossible. Although it would more be more likely with titles that the Japanese side doesn't think is profitable enough to release in Japan anyway. Last edited by llj; 08-15-2016 at 10:48 PM. |

Looks like FUNi again doesn't care about pleasing collectors. See the following tweet chains.
https://twitter.com/SpacemanHardy/st...09002414559232 https://twitter.com/SpacemanHardy/st...11264096604161 https://twitter.com/SpacemanHardy/st...13905111343104 And see these as well. https://twitter.com/SpacemanHardy/st...21089136234496 https://twitter.com/SpacemanHardy/st...21281667338240 https://twitter.com/SpacemanHardy/st...21421396377600 https://twitter.com/SpacemanHardy/st...25355368321026 Sad thing is FUNi is likely to file for bankruptcy sooner than they'll try to improve. Them going under is actually unfortunately very realistic as they've been spending money like crazy, and are overpaying for shows (Ex: The Monster Hunter anime, My Hero Academia, Puzzles & Dragons, and others). |

They are really trying hard to push their streaming service as well. Oh man could you imagine if they file for Chap 11 and then get bought out say by Universal. Then Funi and all it's licenses would be owned by Comcast. Oh dear God terrible... Yet...its funny because all the people that torrent and use KA are like I'm not buying anime. I would laugh at them because they are part of the problem. Gotta love those new LE priced as well. Pretty much paying high dollar for nothing but a chipboard slipbox. Terrible... In the past, whenever FUNi needed money they would just crank out another DBZ release which is guaranteed auto-cash.
But they've also gone to that well so many times that they might no longer be able to rely on pressing that emergency funds button. I'm sure every time a new DBZ release comes out, it still makes less money than the previous one. At some point the well goes dry. It's concerning because as bad as they are (probably my least favorite US anime distributor of the last 15 years in terms of quality) they hold A LOT of properties and if they go under, a lot of titles will be stuck in license hell. |

Most of the DBZ fans I know are not really anime fans as we define them here. They run the gamut from jocks to computer/gaming geeks to average Jills and Joes with no real hardcore interests or hobbies. DBZ's biggest claim to fame has always been its popularity outside anime fandom. It's the most well known anime in the west other than Pokemon. |
