I have a 65EF9500 coming for $2996. I know the new models will have Dolby Vision support and will be brighter, but I also know they won't be $2996. But this is still a big purchase. I have an old LG 60" plasma right now. Outside of "the new one will be better" argument, which I know...is there any real reason why a) I *shouldn't* buy the 65EF9500 for this price, or b) that, coming from an older Plasma, I won't be happy with this model (I still need to upgrade my player and receiver to pass HDR, so I'll be using this primarily to make my current blu-rays look better for the time being - my Plasma also didn't have 3D).

I would wait and get an HDR/Dolby Vision-ready model when I got all my ducks in a row, if I were you

It's my understanding that this model *is* HDR capable, it just doesn't have Dolby Vision specifically. I'm just not sure that's worth another $1000-$1200 to me. At least not coming from the set I'm coming from and at this price point. The way I see it, I'm looking at another year or more if I want a 2016 model at this price...and that's if I'm lucky (under $3K is still a great price point for the 2015 model from what I'm seeing). I'll *definitely* be getting a UHD player and HDR-capable receiver (likely when The Abyss comes out "early next year"). Basically, I'm just wondering if there are any glaring reasons I *won't* like this set or would regret doing so, outside of "the next one will have more", etc. That's going to be the case regardless of when I take the plunge.

Will you have an easy way of returning the EF9500?

I ask because this model is plagued with near black vertical banding, ranging from annoying but tolerable, to absolute dealbreaker. There's absolutely no way to know which end of the scale you're going to receive, and while LG was initially very accommodating, many people took advantage of their relaxed replacement policy and scammed them into getting upgraded models for nothing (for the E6), or a very reasonable fee (for the G6.) As a result, they're much harder to deal with with now.

I, unfortunately, received an EF9500 with severe vertical banding. Thankfully, though, I was one of the very first to receive LG's generous upgrade offer.

Personally, I couldn't tolerate the banding. It showed up in at least 40% of the content I regularly watched, and was completely unacceptable for a display of that price point.

If you're able to return the set mostly worry-free, then I'd say try it. Maybe you'll get a good panel, or at least one where you can tolerate the level of banding.

Just note, this isn't a case of some TVs will have the issue and some won't. They all have it. It's just a matter of how severe it is, and how much you can tolerate/notice it.

Just my advice. Enjoy your plasma for the time being and wait another year to make the jump

Thank you, that's what I wanted to know - there's a major issue with the set, so I'll regret the purchase. I'll wait. They're shipping one in for me, but I have not yet purchased it. It's kind of a douche move on my part not to take it now, but it's my choice ultimately. Thanks for the advice folks.

Let's not jump to too many conclusions. Firstly, Penny Dreadful S3 isn't even out on disc yet, so the source is likely to be hampered by significant lossy compression, and near black is what suffers the worst in this scenario. Crushing is going to be the necessary course of action here, if you can't handle the noise.

Those screenshots are not even of my Oled panel. Another owner had bad luck with the EF950 and ended up replacing with a B6. Pic 1 is of 950 and pic 2 is of B6 with same picture settings

Thank you. Never even watched the show but I found it interesting that someone can exchange a 950 five times thinking that the issue is with the panel and not with the source

Ah, so that was a trick posting. Very sly. I just finished seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix...there are noisy scenes that are difficult to escape. Pretty amazing PQ all the same.
