I'm almost confused now, so which/how many various devices will transmit TV audio?
My Roku streaming device, my two bluray players, are all connected via HDMI to my receiver and they function just fine.
But if I want to use the TV apps I must use the HDMI ARC terminal on the TV going into the HDMI ARC Out on the receiver. When I select ARC, that triggers my Sony bluray player to switch itself on every time without me even trying. As soon as I disable ARC that stops happening, but now i cant hear the sound out of my speakers when I play my TV apps like Netflix or Amazon (unless of course I use the ridicuolus TV speakers LOL)

..what I dont get is why ARC would trigger the Sony BD player (which in not even directly connected to the TV, but to one of the 8 HDMI Inputs on my Denon) to switch itself on...A few times I was watching something on Netflix through the TV app and out of nowhere the source switched to the Sony BD player HDMI channel for no reason
When I disable ARC this never happens. But now I lose audio out when I play Netflix from my TV apps

So you tell me why would I want THREE (3) devices running when I can just have TWO (2) devices running with the same result?
Now, I got it.

Well, I have the same as you. (3 devices) And, there ARE NOT the same results, that's why you have to use 3 devices.
As you said you were using ARC and you noticed that the audio is not the same from playing on your TV than playing from the BD player right? because ARC doesn't return the HD audio back. So that's why you want to try optical now. I know and I did the same with no luck.
Now, optical vs HDMI as both are digital but HDMI is better as it can pass higher-resolution audio, so what's the point having 7.1 speakers setup when you won't get Dolby THD/ DTS HD on optical. imaging Dolby Atmos/DTS: X.
Also if you get HDMI with 1.25% up of silver will be even better just for audio. I tested myself the audioquest cinnamon vs monster black and I was able to ear the difference.

So, I'm using ARC as I said before and I have to use the 3 devices to play Music Video, Netflix, ETC..... on my UHD player to get the best audio.
Now, I do play pandora and my NAS HDD dirrecty from Denon online mode for even better audio. Also tested.
I don't know why you are have trouble on having the BD player on?

Man, if you have so many streaming devices using HDMI directly to the receiver, why you want to use your TV app? The reason why you are able to control or trigger your sony BD is because that's what ARC does, Remote control over HDMI while passing NON HD audio back to the receiver from TV. If you turn ARC off, how you expect the TV audio get to the receiver?? There is no way.

But Arc set to On should NOT trigger my Sony BD player to turn on out of the blue...I can be watching Netflix from my TV Smart Apps and all of a sudden it jumps to Sony BD player for absolutely no reason; so that constantly forces me to grab the remote and switch back to TV source...It doesnt make any sense other that the HDMI ARC system on this unit is buggy...
It's like having a ghost that keeps turning my Sony BD player back on

Ok, when I see 'TV Audio' I think of 'Over the Air' audio. When you mention TV audio, you are talking about the various Apps that are on your TV. I don't use ARC, because I have nothing that my TV controls. I use cable, while my playstation plays bluray, Netflix and amazon.

I do have an optical cable from my TV for emergency cable lost of signal, but not using ARC. It seems like you wouldn't have those ARC on and off problems if you were to have different selectors on your AVR.

Even though I have Roku and streaming apps on my two BD players, I like to use the streaming apps in the WebOS that is included in my new LG OLED. When I have TV connected to receiver via HDMI ARC port, it looks and sound beautiful-with DD+ and all-but on this particular TV, using ARC also has this nasty effect of making my Sony bluray player "wake up" for no reason. So while I watch Netflix on my TV Netflix app, suddenly the Sony player wakes up and my TV switches to Sony BD player home

Is because your Sony wants you to play the app on him and not in the TV for better audio. He's helping you to decide. lol
Try to turn off HDMI control on your TV. Is just configuration man. When I also turn on my cable, everything gets on and I can control everything with one remote because ARC will send signal to everything that is connected to the receiver.

I switched off HDMI control on the receiver as well. Only thing active is ARC, and the ONLY way the Sony gets to be left alone is wiith ARC disabled. If I could keep ARC disabled and instead rely on Optical audio between the TV and the receiver, that would solve the issue...But I dont know if Optical audio will output DD+ on my streaming programs from the TV apps

Well, just try optical to check the difference. For me, there is no way I will use any TV audio out app if I can use it on another device with better quality.

You are correct Optical will not carry DD+ to your receiver.

Problem solved. Damn CEC on the BD player must be turned off or the TV keeps activating the player!

Just installed it on mine. What kind of difference should I be listening for when I play a DTS:X soundtrack now?

I have no idea. What are those? I have 7.1 speakers, they are about 11 years old. Denon S900W receiver.

Mine tried to automatically install it over wifi (not my first option) and had some sort of connection failure. Sucks because I had to do a hard reset. Gonna have to do the Audyssey again over the weekend.

DO NOT install firmwar updates over WiFi. That can damage your receiver.
