Lol I own CTR tv 26" 4:3 for videogames on my PlayStation 2 fat alive! I fixed on the system new optical laser chipset replace old laser chipset. It's $56.99 bit expensive!

Further expanding upon what you’ve bolded ^ and of which I don’t recall being mentioned in thee old American Cinematographer Magazine article about Interstellar…. to be precise, the IP 35mm was scanned on an Arriscan film scanner at *6K*, extracting the 5K Academy area, then extracting the final 4.8 projection area and then down scaling for the DCP encode.

All that said, even preeminent large format film folks are looking to the future and have felt compelled recently to speak to audiences about this thing called UHD/HDR, e.g. “How do we take UHD and HDR into account when remastering or restoring older titles? ”

Which included a lot:

• odd/even burn-ins for HFR content
• CPL Metadata w/ TKR
• synced captions
• 96k audio• 4K test pattern

but not HDR.
This is the complete list of formats which was included:

You bring up an interesting conundrum with Nolan though. I am well aware of his love of film and film projection but in this case the film stock he is using is capable of so much more than what the actual projector can take advantage of. So in this case, the projection system is the limiting factor. So why not shoot it on the film stock and take away the film projector that is limiting its potential (and honestly this applies to more than just HDR since we all end up seeing dups that have multiple plays on them and always end up disappointing in quality).

I saw Interstellar in true IMAX 70 and The Hateful Eight in true 70 and both of them looked like ass compared to what I see from 4K digital playback at the Cinerama in Seattle. Crappy contrast, judder, inherent noise/scratches, and more. I'm all for film capture, but lets move away from the crappy film projection.
Well, Nolan ain't as much of an anti-digital nutter as QT is. If I may be permitted to quote the bit about Interstellar's digital theatrical version again:
Quote:
The digital presentation of INTERSTELLAR has been created from 4 and 8k scans of the photochemically-color graded film elements, fine-tuned in the digital realm to maximize the color and contrast attributes of digital projectors, and dust-busted to achieve the cleanest and most stable image presentation possible. The film was mastered in 4k for the highest digital resolution currently available.
The bolded part surprised me when I first read it at the time of release, i.e. that even the almighty Nolan is admitting that the digital presentation is the cleanest and most stable of all the available versions...but it happens to be true for the reasons you've stated.

Nolan looks to the "future" and he simply doesn't care...

His movies have a 5.1 mix while Dolby Atmos is available. That's because his intended theatrical format is FILM:
  • 35mm: Dolby Digital AC3 5.1 (320 kb/s)
  • 70mm: Datasat APTX-100 5.1 (882 kb/s)
  • IMAX 15/70: Uncompressed DTAC 5.1

No digital intermediate, no 7.1/Atmos audio, 35mm IP scan.

To expect him to care about HDR, something that one year ago wasn't even a thing, is simply crazy....

The quote works on so many levels given the inherent rudeness by so many people on hobbyist AV forums (e.g. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post12619493 )

….that said, I find the book (thesis) by JFK to be a good prelude to a movie like Dunkirk involving WW II. Perhaps others will also. Also, quite insightful for such a young writer at the time.

Pieter, are you the one keeping up the true 4K UHDBD thread? (whatever it's true name is.) I guess HDGoofnut op'ed that thread. Are you passing these updates on to him?

By the way, we need to keep this thread running while Penton is on vacay, maybe get to 3M views by the time he gets back.

There is no guarantee it will make it to UHD disc. Likely, yes. The "UHD with 4K Master" thread is for announced discs.

I like having the topic separation between '4K in movie theaters' and '4K UHD disc/streaming'. Unfortunately, it's rare these days to see a high quality release in theaters and we should be celebrating it whenever possible.

As soon it hits on 4K UHD Blu-ray, we will add it.

You may be waiting a while. It's all about flashy Hollywood films right now. There is a total of one music title in 4k that I'm aware of: Temple of Rock.

However, there are a handful of Pure Audio music Blu-ray's in 24 bit Dolby Atmos from the 2L Norway label and from the King's College Choir. No video, just immersive, ultra high resolution audio.

However, you do need a Dolby Atmos/DTS: X capable receiver or pre-amp/processor and, at the very least, a 5.1.2 speaker layout.

music wise - I'd love to see that Muse concert ('Live at Rome Olympic Stadium, July 2013’) bluray released in it's native 4K resolution.

Roger Waters: The Wall - was also captured in 4K
