I discovered Suspiria on VHS but I don't recall if I watched Bird before Inferno. But I do recall finding Inferno genuinely scary when watching with my girlfriend and her sister at the time.
Unlike Suspiria which has many crash bang wallop moments Inferno has many genuinely eerie and scary scenes.
I think from the moment the girl goes underwater I realised this was something special and although it makes less sense than Suspiria it oozes atmosphere.
From Bird to Opera I also class as his classic era and all the films made at that time have moments of real skill.

I didn't find Trauma to be as bad as many make out and Sleepless also has some great moments but the majority of the rest are hard to sit through.
Do You Like Hitchcock probably the biggest embarrassment although Mother of Tears,Dracula and some others really are appalling in comparison.

I got this today:

Another movie on the top of your list should be Deep Red. If you are region B or free try getting the Remastered Arrow set.

Having watched Suspiria and Inferno on VHS in the 80's I was incredibly excited when I was able to purchase a VHS of Deep Red as the film was basically banned due to the video nasties stupidity and rental stores were forced to sell off movies that were not getting classified.
It was the edited 105 minute version but I have to say I found it disappointing compared to the other 2. They both seemed to be ( and still do) on a different level. I found the scenes that extended it even more didn't really help when it appeared on dvd.

Even the noted authority on Argento Alan Jones thought that Phenomena would need massive edits before a commercial UK and US release both for violence and for the nonsense of the storyline. As Creepers it really was junk but the extended version added the much missed violence (which I think was more cut in the UK than the US) along with other scenes that made it less of a choppy mess.
While Creepers was crap it is good that the Synapse set will include all 3 versions which is a good reason on its own to upgrade from the Arrow releases.

I'm hoping that the Synapse release of Suspiria will be as much of a revelation as the Magnum Laserdisc was back in the day. After cropped VHS seeing it in LD quality and widescreen was amazing.
The Anchor Bay audio cock up meant I couldn't really watch Suspiria on dvd ever properly so the initial Blurays at least sorted the sound out even though the pictures were a tad disappointing. To get those opening minutes back to sounding like they did on Laserdisc was very exciting.
I'm hoping but not expecting that Synapse will port over all the bonus features including both documentaries.

So far I've seen Bird With the Crystal Plummage, Deep Red and Suspiria. I tried to watch Inferno but didn't like it at all. Didn't even finish it.

Suspiria is my least favorite of the three. I thought the visuals and the soundtrack were better than the film itself. Bird is a good thriller, above the average, and really liked Deep Red, by far my favorite. Guess I'm more into Argento's giallos than his supernatural thrillers. Tenebrae will be my next film.

But the visuals is the film. And it's sad that you didn't finish Inferno.

I used to hate Inferno, but now it's one of my favorites. Definitely worth another shot.

Inferno is not only my favourite Argento film, but it's one of my favourite horror films period. Love the slow, dream-like pace of it and the atmosphere is just incredible.

I meant storywise. I thought the stories of Deep Red and Bird were far more interesting than Suspiria. And Inferno was a little too style over substance to me.
Maybe in the future I'll give it another shot.

I loved Suspiria but Inferno was terribly dull. It had a few great scenes, but ir was a chore to get to them.

Admittedly I still haven't watched anything post-Phenomena. I've got Mother of Tears on DVD, but it's been collecting dust the past couple of years.

I clicked on this thread for an update, and all I saw was some stupid gif.

Slogan for Ray's T-Shirt.

Edited, so as not to bump the thread for nothing. I'll tell you what Ray. Keep the money, but stop polluting threads with pointless and unfunny gifs. Bumping threads in the infantile fashion that you do is just thread crapping, was never funny and was tiresome the moment you began.

Do I have your permission to run with that?

I don't want to sell a couple thousand of those things on Ebay and then find out I'm getting sued for copyright infringement.

...I'll give you 10%.

Edited, so as not to bump the thread for nothing.

I was not the one who bumped the thread that day.

In fact, there were more than a dozen posts that very same day, none of which offered any new information about the release. If you had actually taken the time to read the previous page you would've understood that.

As opposed to letting your disdain for me cloud your judgment to the point of making a remark that had no basis in reality.

That being said...I'm serious about the T-shirts.

Are you positive you don't want a cut?

...this is the last time I'm going to ask.

Many Italian horror movies are just set pieces loosely strung together.
The Beyond is one and I would say Inferno is another. The story is minimal and it's the individual set pieces that are there to be enjoyed which is where a good home cinema setup brings in benefits.
Although I found it eerie even back in the VHS days you need no distractions, a good sound system and then you can wallow in the mood of the movie.
It's not really something to watch if you have a chatty viewing companion or are stuck listening through tv speakers
