Were they recent titles? As far as I know no titles have required updated firmware in years. If every Blu-ray works on every Blu-ray player manufactured after 2011 (for example) that's good enough for me. That's still hundreds of millions of players so I think Blu-ray discs are safe.

Fortunately for most game consoles (everything but Xbox One) when a game needs a system update it includes the update on the disc. Therefore the PS3 can be fully updated (and play every Blu-ray) without ever needing to connect to Sony's servers. Worst case after the PS3 servers are shut down is you'd have to buy a more recent title for less than $10 to update your PS3.

Yes it can, its a business not a charity. You can't really put a customer lawsuit to a bankrupt company that has no physical products to sell in liquidations. Servers won't go for that much nor its space. Sony has already proved and removed access to digital content from their network just this year w the playstation mobile section (I think that was what it was called). They told owners to download their copies and keep it backed up since they wouldn't be able to re-downlaod them and that is a company that is still a float. At best if UV or iTunes ever goes bankrupt you will have a few months to download all your stuff and keep it in a hard drive / personal cloud. Amazon btw won't buy UV if it goes bankrupt. Doesn't make business sense to carry the extra load for the small benefits.

lol, sure is a big selection, but like netflix is not all of it. Plus I can pace myself and choose what to buy and watch when I want to. If I rent I feel obligated to watch it even if I have other things to do that always seem to pop up.

Do you really think you'd have a case? "I bought that movie 20 years ago for $10 and now I can't access it anymore." Even in the highly unlikely instance where they sided with you all you'd get is your $10 back. You still wouldn't have access to the movie anymore.

If you buy the movie digitally, it's still yours. Even if amazon doesn't make it available to purchase for whatever reason. You still have your copy in your library. Just not available on the site anymore. But that doesn't really happen with digital. Once it's available, it stays available.

They may still be in libraries but what is your proof that they still will be decades from now? It certainly hasn't worked with the video game industry: all the downloadable content for the original Xbox is completely unavailable now. If you think the law makes sure that movies remain available why didn't it apply to video games?

idk anything about video games. I've never been a 'gamer' in my life. I played frogger at the arcade as a kid. That's about it. I don't even play games on my smartphone.

My video game example was proof that digital content has been completely removed (even from libraries), whether or not you like video games is irrelevant. If you don't know anything about video games then it may be new information to you, but it should make you more uneasy about buying digital content.

Well decades from now, they will have something way better than bluray and digital. Bluray will be primitive like the VHS. And if it does all go away, its not the end of the world. I'm not concerned about my movie collection decades from now. I'm more concerned about my kids' well being decades from now. If a hurricane destroyed my entire movie collection, but spared my kids. I wouldn't care. It's not that important to me. At the end of the day, they're just movies. And most of the movies I rent, are for my kids anyway.

If you wouldn't give up your entire movie collection in an to save your kids' lives, or protect someone you care deeply about, then you need to reevaluate your life. It's really sad actually. That movies and blurays are more important to you than family.

If you lose a movie, it's replaceable. When you lose a loved one, they're gone forever. The fact that you can't see that is frightening.

Not recent. Iirc, that was circa 2009-2010. That said, I wouldn't really know if any of my newer Blu-ray movie purchases require firmware updates since the PS3/PS4 have been kept updated recently due to online games.

That took a dark turn. It's a huge leap to say that if we care about movies we must not care about our families. I absolutely care about my family more than movies... are you only capable of caring about one thing?

If your argument is that it's fine to support digital because you don't care if any of the movies in your collection are still available in the future than that's reasonable. But that wasn't the point you were making before.

And your comment about a movie being replaceable misses my main argument. If a movie is delisted from a digital service it isn't replaceable. But physical movies are always replaceable. If any discs in my collection are damaged or lost I can buy replacements from one of thousands of people who still have working copies. Since digital movies don't have a used market that option doesn't exist.

I have only had a couple of interactions with you but I'm finding you incredibly irritating already. The fact you have only joined this year suggests to me you are just here to rant about how great digital is or to wind people up. You are the type of member that makes me think twice about being a member on this forum. That's the impression I get.

Secondly, I am about as close yo my family as anyone possibly could be. We see each other all the time but that doesn't alter how big an impact movies have had on me. You made a silly assumption and forgive me, but IMO, an ignorant one. Now jog on.

Yeah, that was quite some jump. I don't have kids (never wanted any) but I am big on family. The guy is just trying to irritate. I may use the ignore button for the first time ever.

The thing is, some people just don't get it and they never will. We know what we love and we always will.
