Not so much 'already', it's more Panasonic's bespoke chippery using much the same firmware as they've been using for ages, so the people who've been hacking the firmware on regular BD players for years had no trouble doing the same to the firmware of the UB900. And yes, it's got to be manually set but it's just a short little sequence of buttons on the remote which reboots the player to the required region, and the removal of the UOP/PUO features is a lovely little bonus (although with the subtitle shift you can move locked subs off of the screen anyway).

As for the flip-down front, mine started to squeak after a few months which highlights just how tackily built this deck really is.
