Michael Rueben's review is up. He gave the 3D aspect of this movie 4.5 stars!
Atmos audio track: 5 stars. The movie as a whole? Not too good: only 2 stars. Link The Legend of Tarzan's 3D presentation may have been created by post-production conversion, but the tech wizards are getting really good at it, and significant portions of the film seem to have been designed with 3D in mind. The opening sequence in which Rom stares up at an elaborately carved rock face gives a vertiginous sense of the height. An ostrich in the flock that runs alongside Clayton and Williams sticks its beak out of the frame. A delicate blue butterfly flutters in and out of the two-dimensional plane before landing gently on Jane's shoulder. During the final assault on the port town of Boma, debris from collapsing structures flies wildly in multiple directions. These and numerous other 3D effects have been achieved with a complete absence of crosstalk or other distortion. TLOT's 3D presentation cannot overcome the film's shortcomings in narrative progress and character presentation, but it effectively expands the story's canvas, adding further visual interest to a project that has to rely heavily on its eye candy to sustain the viewer's interest. ![]() |

4,5 stars for the 3D?! What the...
I must have seen another movie then cause it certainly did not look good to me, I thought it was one of the weaker conversions like those in the early days of 3D. Also did not like the movie itself so this is an easy pass for me. Only aspect of the movie that I did like was Robbie... ![]() |

I didn't see it in theatres and just got the 3D disc based on the good Bluray.com review. I got worried based on the comments made in this post about the sub par 3D so I popped the disc in last night to check it out. It was late so I only watch the beginning up to the opening title. So far the 3D looks great. Loved the pop out effect. I wish more movies did this. I hope the rest of the movie's 3D holds up to the quality of the opening scene.

Shocked how much I enjoyed this as I was not really that interested in it.
The film looks BEAUTIFUL and I liked the 3D. There were some great 3D moments and I thought it was quite natural looking. Mostly medium but it certainly helped the average looking CGI animals out in a big way and there were a number of shots clearly designed with 3D in mind. I'd give the film 3.75 and the 3D a 4.00. |

Watched this today and was I pleasantly surprised with how much I liked it. I liked it more the Jungle Book. The trailers didn't do much for me and then it had such a mixed reaction, my expectations were really low but this was a really good movie. Nice use of 3D as well.

The British version of this 3D Blu-Ray is significantly less expensive. Do you all predict that the British version will play on American players? What is Warner Brothers' usual practice?
Is Disney the only major studio that (usually) makes their European 3D Blu-Rays region-free? |

Region locking is something NO consumer EVER wants. Only bad guys like Lionsgate, E1 etc region lock by default (in the US it's Shout Factory, Olive and Kino heading up that particular hall of shame) Warner Brothers always release blu-rays region free, unless they are forced to cripple the discs by greedy licensors (e.g. the German release of Every Thing Must Be Fine - in that case the licensors insisted on horrific forced subtitles as well as region locking, for that I hope they burn in hell). That shouldn't happen with their major new releases though, I can't remember the last time one of those was region locked. Universal titles are usually also region free. Paramount too, and increasingly Sony and Fox. Last edited by the13thman; 10-18-2016 at 02:36 PM. Reason: Just had to badmouth region locking some more... |

I rewatched this on 3D blu ray yesterday after my IMAX disappointment and you know what, I really enjoyed it. A lot of the problems I had with the movie the first time I saw it are still there. Margot Robbie's character is horribly written and has absolutely excruciating dialogue throughout and her accent and performance just doesn't seem to fit the era the movie is set in. Also the CG is still a real mixed bag. A lot of the background stuff is OK (apart from the jungle stuff) but the main FX are far below what we would expect from a summer blockbuster and a movie that apparently cost around $180 Mil. I don't know what went on with the fx but they are just not up to scratch. However since my initial disappointment I have come around to the visual FX in this and accepted them for what they are.
It definitely feels like there was a longer, better cut of the movie and that it got hacked down quite a bit. I think the big problem this movie has is that as soon as shooting finished David Yates buggered off to do Fantastic Beasts so wasn't around for post production! This is crazy to me that a director essentially 'didn't finish' their movie properly and left it in other hands. I think this is the reason for the poor VFX, ie the director isn't around to oversee the CG work and give approval or not. Also I think this is why the movie got chopped down from being much longer, because the director once again isn't around to put his foot down and insist on his cut. I did read an interview with the cinematographer Henry Braham that supports all of this: "Interesting. I saw it with David Yates in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago, and he said, “It’s more of a movie now than a film.” And I know what he meant. What he meant was it’s become more two-dimensional. So whether that’s a Warner decision or how that’s come about – actually, David’s probably somebody who’s not pushed around too much – the journey the movie’s taken is actually a lot of scenes, a lot of the layering of drama has been taken out of it, and you pretty much go from A to B pretty quickly. Now when you consider the market for this kind of entertainment, it kicks off on 8,000 screens in China, it’s big in Russia, you get it. You’re talking to such a broad cultural spread that maybe you see the argument for that. I think if you want to make something really personal, you’re going to have to be super-powerful and committed and prepared to take a big box-office bomb if it doesn’t work. Or you do a smaller, more personal movie, which may be a lot more interesting as a film but is not going to have the same outreach as a piece of entertainment." So whilst Yates may not have been happy with the edit of the final movie I think he only has himself to blame for going off and doing another project rather than actually finishing this movie first. Anyway the big drawback's are Robbie, Waltz's very average villain, CGI and editing. That aside this is a rollicking adventure fantasy movie with some exciting and well staged action, large scale, a good sense of adventure and nice 3D. I love these kinds of movies and I guess I was expecting a lot more than what we got but to be honest, in retrospect what we got is very entertaining and I really loved rewatching it last night. The 3D comes across so much better at home (I was very critical of the 3D in the IMAX). I don't know whether it's just me or whether it really does look vastly improved on blu ray but there are loads of really nice 3D shots, a few fun pop outs (the ostrich head, Tarzan swinging towards the screen in the train scene, the beads from the villain's necklace popping out towards camera to name three) and good depth throughout. I am much more pleased with this movie second time around. Last edited by levcore; 11-02-2016 at 08:53 AM. |

Enjoyed the film. Was looking for an escapist, above-human hero to come to the rescue and found it in Tarzan's return to the Congo.
It might be me getting so used to 3D that at times the effects no longer appear so awe inspiring. Some were great, especially toward the climax, however, was it that overall while the depth was natural in many ways it appeared limited in this flick? Last edited by Joe D.; 11-10-2016 at 04:34 PM. |

They have them in the store. I ran in around 10:00pm and grabbed a copy. Waited in line for about 5 minutes and was out the door.
