If I see a light not a part of the building or carried by anyone other than an employee, I'm telling you to put it away. If your life needs that phone within the time it takes for an entire movie to play, don't go to the theatre. There are people whose lives need reevaluating and it's not the people who can watch a movie uninterrupted.

You should have amazing vision if the light is so dim that I can barely see it.

Have you ever seen a Samsung phone that's under 5% battery life? The screen is so dim there's really just no way you'd be able to catch it from a distance.

I don't think anybody's saying that the sight of somebody's phone is enough to drive them into an inconsolable rage from which neither party will escape unscathed. They're just saying it's a wee bit annoying and rude.

I've seen people with the brightness way down on their phones and have never been bothered by it. The only reason I knew they turned the brightness down and had a phone out in the first place is that they did it during the preshow so I noticed the bright cellphone beforehand. After that I never noticed it again.

While I get the point of leaving it alone and living many decades before it became such a day to day thing, I realize in today's world it doesn't work like that so if someone has to be on their phone at least having the brightness down is fine.

I've had my mom call me twice during a movie for an actual emergency (bathroom leaking into basement, couldn't find a pet) and I left the movie immediately as my phone kept vibrating. While some emergency situations can wait, calling to get home to move equipment while locating a leak was more important than a movie. Finding a kitty snuggled underneath a chair and ignoring the family not so much, but eh whatever. The technology has its uses.

During back to back or late movies I've got on my phone (while still in my purse so only I could see it) to check scores of basketball or football games.

Here's my quote again:

Quote:

If I don't see a light, I won't say anything. The same way I can't tell people behind me using their phones to stop because I don't see them.

BUT, it's clear there are more than a few people who think their phones are "no big deal" to others. Giving all people the benefit of the doubt, which I am inclined to do, anyone who uses their phone in the theatre doesn't seem to think it's an issue. But it is. Always.

The bottom line is it's terrible theatre etiquette. There's no excuse.

What "anyone" is saying here is just having your phone out period, brightness be damned, is the biggest sin of sins.

I will be the first to callout a person whoms phone is super bright. Or if they're talking on the phone trying to be quiet I'll say the same thing because whispering in a theater full of quiet people is still noisy.

Let's call a truce friend, only because I see you like Darkonda.

That's what you don't get. It does bother people (and who are you to judge when it does or doesn't?). So no, we don't mind our ****ing business.

What about those damn red signal lights they use at the airport that Regal Employees carry when they do their "Sweeps"? Every time one of those guys come in, my attention focuses more on them then the movie. This usually happens twice during a viewing but it can go as much as 6 times within a 90 minute movie...WTF????

I have mixed feelings about those.

My hope is that the frequency of their visits gets other people to stop using their phones and such. The red light is definitely dimmer/more ambient than any cell phone, at least.

I've wished for a long time theatres would have premium showtimes with a security personnel in constant attendance. I would pay extra if it meant knowing any cell phone user or disruptive behaviour would be instantly addressed.

Nobody has to be on their phone during a movie. That's the point.

The fact that a lot of people think they do have to be on their phone is both sad and disturbing. It also suggests that those people (and their impossibly short attention spans) have no business being in a theater in the first place. If you can't shut up and sit still for the duration of the film, you should either be attending the special "lights on, feel free to move around and talk" screenings or waiting for the home video release.

The self-centered entitlement of some people is just astounding...

By all means, let's be honest - the two people to whom you were directly responding both specifically described attempts to be considerate while checking their phones. Hell, the second guy talked about - what was it - peeking at his phone while it was tucked into his jacket?

We do agree about one thing though. There are a lot of entitled, inconsiderate children out there. Where we apparently differ is I include in the entitled, inconsiderate child category those who demand others accommodate them and their wishes while being unwilling to make even reasonable accommodations themselves.

People do stuff I don't like all the time. Subjecting myself to things I don't like is part of the price of wandering out in public.

I don't particularly care for most perfumes. Other people do. Somebody wearing perfume sits next to me on the train or at a theater, oh well, sucks to be me. That's part of going out in public.

Same with somebody quickly and discreetly checking their phone.

On what planet is it entitled and inconsiderate to expect people to sit and watch a movie without checking their phones, texting, making phone calls, having conversations, etc.? It's now unreasonable to expect adults to behave like adults?

Here's a newsflash: just because people claim that they're being discreet with their phones doesn't mean that others aren't still being bothered by them. And again, the reality is that a lot of people don't bother to do anything to mitigate the disruption of others, which was clearly my point in the post you responded to.

It's like you're so eager to have an argument that you'll take any contrary position, no matter how simplistic or idiotic. It's awfully childish (not to be confused with childlike, with its connotations of innocence and trust) and also kind of sad. Good luck with all that...

Don't be ridiculous, of course I do.

I pay good money to ride trains and buses. I pay good money to shop in grocery stores. And drink in bars and eat in restaurants and shop in malls and every time I do every one of those things somebody is just about guaranteed to do something that annoys or bothers or offends me.

Boo hoo, poor me.

There is a distinct difference between these examples though. It's generally understood (although this is clearly becoming by fewer and fewer) activities like using a cell phone are discouraged and unwelcome in a movie theatre. SO MUCH SO, most theatres play an entire screen request to put them away/keep them silent.

This is different from a consequence of someone's existence a la perfume/bad odor. Or maybe even a tall person blocking the view of someone behind them.

Hell, an ill person's frighteningly loud cough is debatable in a theatre since it is a part of their existence in some way.

I am not willing to accept that with a cell phone. It is a behaviour specifically discouraged and absolutely unwelcome. The justifications come from an increasing need by more people simply to look at a screen at least once during the span of three hours tops.

It is a societal shift. Some might be ok with that, but it is not the same as something like perfume.
