It's more vivid than I've ever seen Dawn look before. It's always had a bleak palette but I've noticed some subtle little lighting gels for the first time here.
2.2 is OK for maybe daytime, try 2.4 this will give a better reprisentation of the industry standard on most TV's if calibrated for crucial darkened room viewing.

The restoration as such looks pretty neat, though.

On my 55" set at normal viewing distance, you can see something going on sometimes, mainly in scenes shot in daylight. Exactly like the adjacent frames posted by a previous poster. But I really didn't find it as obvious in motion as in the screenshots.

It's poor encoding, but I don't find it ruinous. Should they have another go and replace the discs? I think so, but I won't throw a tantrum if they don't. Imagine if Shout had to replace each release they'd encoded badly.

If this set didn't have this encoding issue I'd have bought it, but I don't feel like double dipping which will happen eventually. Still a nice looking set for collectors but I will wait for the next inevitable Dawn release on blu.

2.4 is far too dark for my liking.

Grain structure is completely different, bigger and you sum original negative grain to interpositive one.
I didn't say anything about Dawn, just that 4K was the least of Highlander's problems. TLADILA was 4-perf though

As for the hinky encoding, if one were to look at a stable shot of sky or a background and really concentrate on one area then you can just see the grain get coarser and softer, on and off, but we don't watch movies like that so it's not a massive problem. It's certainly softer than the 4K disc, but whether this is due to the 4K res or the spotty encoding on the BD is unclear.

I think it depends on the TV and if you are pro calibrated or not as 2.2 on some TV's will give closer to 2.4 or maybe the other way around. There is no way of knowing unless you can measure the Gamma.

I have measured the gamma. It's not ruler flat but it averages out at 2.26 on my TV which is perfect to my eyes.

Nice one 2.2 still looks very nice, 2.4 i believe is quite a recent (correct me if i am wrong) standard.

PS
Mind you it has been that long since i calibrated any TV's i could not be sure what looks better.

Some people say that BT.1886 is the current standard too, so I'll just stick with what I like.

Stills are very unforgiving on Caps-a-holic. Really highlights some of the concerns I have had with grading and querying colourspace. No wonder I had to change the settings on my TV to get it to look right. Black levels don't look right at all. Does look better in motion elsewhere without the digital nasties but now I know it's not my TV settings that were wrong. I'll put them back to what they were now...

I think I was convincing myself it was better than it was earlier through wishful thinking (and the lack of smearing, edge enhancement artefacts, etc. which is about the only thing this release now has in it's favour).

On the plus side, all that scanner noise from older releases that had the European cut is gone on the new one.

I think someone needs to go back to that raw full perf scan and start again with the post-scan mastering....

Is the 4K disc graded the same, Geoff?

I've got the French one, that's how much I love the Argento cut. Well, I had the French one as the disc decided to crap out and now it don't play right.

On top of it ? Nicer and nicer...
It's like it knows how bad is it and prefer to die rather to let you suffer this again.

In comparison the new Italian release really looks superior.

I looked at the caps of the US theatrical version and the old one looked better.

STILL grain probs?! WTFFingF, does the Euro UHD source from a scrubbed 2K DI or something? Whole project no doubt needs a new master, elements permitting. Old Anchor Bay a write-off; we need a serious upgrade, start-finish.

Just about to order this hoping the prob won't be that noticeable in motion. I only have a 42" and while critical, have never concentrated on grain patterns while watching a movie. I never did in the theater! Finger crossed.
BTW, can you measure gamma with a light meter? I have a Japanese TV so it's been slow going calibrating & fine tuning it over the years when my JP wife refused to help translating after her first go over the basic calibrations. At least I have a student/friend now who can help with that occasionally. I've used several calibration discs, but since I can only use a physical blue filter I've never been able to nail the color settings to look ideal on every BD, and wind up tweaking a bit to suit various labels "house look". I should probably leave well enough alone.
