I have MKV video file that I converted from M2TS file. It has PGS subtitles. When I play this file from external HDD and press subtitle button on remote I get message from the player that this video doesn't have subtitles.

Is it normal, "by design", that this Samsung UHD player cannot play PGS subtitles from MKV file?

TIA
It is by design. Most manufacturers do not support certain external codec files or wrappers because in their minds that would encourage piracy. The only player that might work is from Oppo. They're a Chinese company with a subsidiary in California. Often times they support a lot more file types.

Thanks FilmFreakosaurus,

That dreaded word piracy. Those manufacturers probably don't know that my Sony AVCHD camcorder HDR-HC1 and probably many other cams record date and time stamp as PGS subtitle track. So I have to burn my home video on Blu-ray disk if I want to see subtitles instead of just playing M2TS file (converted to MKV) from the flash drive or memory card.

Today I was trying out the new Reference Premiere Klipsch Atmos modules and I put in the Pacific Rim 4K disc as a demo. I instantly noticed how hot the skin tones were so that had me questioning my picture settings (this is on Sony 930D TV). Ugh.

May I inquire what picture mode you all use on the Samsung UBD8500 player (tools menu during playback brings it up)? Standard, Dynamic, Movie or User (values set to 0)? - Every review I seen says User (with all 0s) or Standard. But I have met people who use Movie mode too. What gives you the best results? It seems for Pacific Rim Movie mode was better, but that may be a bad example of coloring because the contrast is so hot already in that film.

Just go with whatever you enjoy the most

FWIW I think I also have user with zeros.

It varies by person based on to settings, ambient light, personal taste, etc.

Just run with what your eyes enjoy the most!

Thanks Gene! I have seen every one say all zeroes too for user. I will try a few more titles out because I know Pacific Rim is tweaked and colors are harsh at times. Movie mode made the skins look more manageable, but I also want the most accurate coloring for HDR to take over with too.

Good call on trying more titles. On every tv or device I've owned I just naturally get dialed into settings over time based upon what looks good to me. If you want some eye poppers check out xmen apocalypse and the new ghostbusters!

They're both super colorful with great HDR and pq.

Hey guys, I have this Blu Ray player and an OLED55C6P. I've been working on tweaking my setup since I got it a couple of weeks ago, and now I'm trying to figure something out.

When I set up the apps on the TV, I was running into lip sync issues that I couldn't seem to solve with the built-in adjustments - moving from 0 to 1 seemed to overcompensate. So I figured I'd just switch over to using the Blu-Ray player for the smart apps since it doesn't have those issues.

Now what's interesting is watching the exact same 4k videos on YouTube (Rogue One and GOTG2 trailers, for example) the content doesn't look as good as it does when it's played straight from the TV's YouTube app. Is that a natural consequence of routing the Blu-Ray player through my 4k receiver (Yamaha RX-V381 if that helps)? Or is there something within the picture settings somewhere that I might be overlooking? I've turned most of them to "auto" and can't really see a difference when I change the resolution from auto to 2160p, so I'm not sure why the apps look better straight on the TV, but everything else (audio/lip sync, etc.) are much better on the Blu-Ray player.

Make sure video processing in the receiver is off or set to pass through. Turn off all video GUI overlays like volume.

Guys I just want to say how much I am enjoying the player. I been playing all types of movies through it, and I don't even hear it. I love the unit!

It has also been disabled on my player, and it's an European version.

the Info dispaly would let me know what resolution I was getting on Netflix. Tha tis how I found out that House of Cards season 1 was not even in 4K UHD but standard HD 1080. It was a very useful tool to have

We all lost that feature. But I think it is the new Netflix firmware that triggered that

Not sure what's going on, but I'm glad I still have the feature on my TV for now.
Did you get the new Netflix firmware update? Netflix control panel has a different look to it as well

The new look is also very tacky, almost like they took one step back, unless it was intentional to make things look like an old Nintendo video game
