All in the Family, The Jeffersons and More getting soft reboots

When I read about this, I absolutely could not believe it. All in the Family and The Jeffersons may be getting a soft reboot, according to talks between Norman Lear and Sony Pictures. While these would be soft reboots of six episodes per series, the word is that these would re-enact episodes of the respective shows.

The only problem is that these shows would not work as rebooted shows because of the subject matter that surrounded these shows. All in the Family and The Jefferson focused mostly on racism and bigotry. I'm willing to bet that Sony will cast these with a Latino cast.

Exactly. From the way the article reads, they want to remake certain episodes of these shows. My first question is why? My second question is 'who thought this was a great idea"?

Why remake episodes of a classic TV series, just commence with a series reboot if you're going to bother. This has got to be the worst idea ever. These episodes have already been done. Why remake classic episodes?

Hopefully, these ideas will never get past the approval stage.

If they're going to be shooting the old scripts with different actors, why not just show the old episodes?

It's cheaper all around.

And if they're going to change things to reflect modern sensibilities, why not just create a new show?

This option they're going with will please literally no one... unless it gets Archie Bunker's Place finally released on DVD. Then I'll be pleased. But the new show will still probably suck.

Antenna TV, a national free broadcast TV channel, shows unedited versions of the Jeffersons and All in the Family each week with the cursing still intact. Tonight, George Jefferson swore at his guest to leave after the wife insulted Mrs. Louise Jefferson and Florence.
All in the Family, Sanford and Son, I've seen episodes that don't hold anything back this year on that channel, same with Good Times, and it's surprising none of it's edited, which I'm glad to see.

A reboot of sorts? I can't imagine if they'll be able to pull it off.

They're not unedited. They're uncensored.

Unedited would mean they ran the correct 25+ minutes they did on original broadcast, which the Antenna TV versions almost certainly do not.

Also, Sony discontinued releasing AITF and The Jeffersons on DVD over a decade ago. Shout Factory licensed them to complete them.

I think this is a cynical attempt by Sony to write those racist and politically incorrect scenes and dialogue out of these shows. Sony is probably expecting these soft reboots to be a hit so they can reboot those old shows and discontinue releasing All in the Family and The Jeffersons on home video.

Thing is, All in the Family and The Jeffersons represent a part of our culture that we shouldn't forget. they represent opposite sides of the same coin and focused on racial prejudice as it existed at that time. Carroll O'Connor, who portrayed Archie Bunker wasn't racist or bigoted either. The character was based on Norman Lears own father. O'Connor played the character that way because he was always one of those great actors.

Sony is just trying to make a cynical attempt to retcon those old television shows. Personally, I think it's going to backfire. It's like trying to do the same thing with Sanford and Son. Those shows just don't work for modern television, if studios think rebooting those old shows will work. They worked back then because of the ridiculousness or racism and they turned racism into one big joke.

Especially those crossovers. I think it's funny that the screenshot for the video shows Archie with a "you serious?" look and Jefferson with a "damn serious" look. When Archie looks like that, you know something's going down.

Least shows back then had the stones to tackle material but only in the subtle manner.

Have to admit that when you really examine it, George Jefferson is just the black version of Archie Bunker. I found it hilarious when they showed George's reaction when his son was dating the Willis' white daughter. He about flew through the roof in a rage, much in the same way as Archie Bunker when he tried to make an alliance with Henry Jefferson when the two of them started a petition to keep Latinos from moving into the neighborhood.

The raw versions of the episodes can be found on the DVD home releases.

It's similar to the pilot episode of Dukes of Hazzard when Bo and Daisy are talking about inbreeding when she remarks "that's never stopped our family before". Warner Brothers production stopped making allusions to inbreeding after the pilot episode aired.

There was even an attempt to creatively edit those TV shows for home video release, to water down the content. Thankfully, that never went through. This happened before Warner Brothers started releasing the Dukes of Hazzard to home video. I imagine some similar attempt was with Sony Pictures for The Jeffersons and All in the Family.

I'm pretty sure that was just a "Southern Joke". However the first season of DOH was the best of the entire series. IMO

When they moved production out of Georgia the show just lost something.

That first season seems like a totally different show to what it become especially three/four seasons later when they went over the top in the comedy especially with Boss & Roscoe.

I can't even watch the last season as they end up with a alien riding around in the General Lee.

What were the writers thinking?

Thankfully, that purported reboot of Murder She Wrote was cancelled, at the behest of Angela Lansbury who advocated against the TV series. Reboots should never be done because they mostly are pieces of crap.

For instance: Minority Report, Limitless, Cruel Intentions, Murder She Wrote, The Exorcist, Ironside, Charlie's Angels, A-Team, Knight Rider, Bionic Woman, The Rockford Files, Dallas, V.

Remember that some of these shows never got to the production stage before these efforts were shut down. Others were canceled after a season or two.

I don't ever remember any swearing in any of these shows either. The FCC was quite explicit in cracking down on TV shows in the 50's, 60's and 70's when it came to swearing. When the "N" word was used, censors would bleep out those words but for home video releases, the original raw (uncensored episodes) would be released through DVD releases.
