They did the same thing with the DVD's so I do not see why everyone is so surprised they are not doing it with Blu-ray. It is all about making money and Warner is going to try to get every nickel and dime from you.

I remember the collector's edition packages they had for the first releases of the extended editions, I hope they do something similar for the blu releases.

+1. I would prefer no flimsy blu-ray cases. The Ultimate Matrix set has blu-ray cases, but they were on the inside of the box holding the set together so it looked very nice, with a tasteful BD disc logo on the side. Band of Brothers was even better, with a flawless beautiful tin and fold-out disc holders--no blu-ray cases involved.

These just scream out for beautiful book-like packaging (like the original EE DVDs). But PLEASE no ugly blue band across the top of the front cover.

This is also pretty similar to the release scheme they used for the original DVDs. As long as they are open about it, I don't have any problem with it.
Thats the problem they have not mentioned that the EE will be releasesd on BLU. We are almost sure. But we don't know thats the big problem

Three years actually (Dec 2011, a whole decade(!) after FoTR....)

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html

It's only rumor so far and the rumor is the EE will be closer to the Hobbit movies, not necessarily at the same time. If the rumor is true, my guess is the EEs may come in 2010.

My plan would be this: There are approx. 3 years (36 months) until the Hobbit. I would release the theatricals six months apart and then the EE's every six months. That brings us right up to the release of the next movie. That's not what I want but if I were part of WB marketing, it's what I'd do.

Technically, the theatricals haven't been announced either. If the EEs are announced before theatricals are released, then I can live with that.

Yeah, I think the Hobbit is supposed to be up there with HP7.

As much as I love the LOTR movies even on BD I cannot get myself to buy them unless they are the extended editions. It's going to be a pass for me. I better hang onto my sdvd versions for a while longer I guess...

the theatrical version of the BD will not sell.

we all know the long version is far better. if New line want to lose money by selling a product nobody wants, it has to be their loss.

Please boycott this edition so that they learn the lesson. and most important thing, be sure to let them know what you think.

It s not even a double dip : it is a quadruple dip !

I accepted the "we did not release the long version immediately as we have to work on it to make something perfect". But doing the same thing for BRD is the ultimate BS !

there s one word that everybody seems to have forgotten : "seemless branching".

Most of you are full of it. You WILL buy the theatrical version and then sell it when the extended version is released.

Wait so is this for when the actual Hobbit movie goes to the theatre or when it reaches Blu-Ray?

The Theatrical versions are expected/announced to be released in 2009, with the Extended Editions being released to coincide with the theatrical release of The Hobbit.

I am really annoyed about this cr@p! I thought I would finally have both editions on one disc via seamless braching, but they pull this cr@p again.

I actually like the theatrical version of Fellowship better - but like the extended versions of Towers and Return better.

I'm really let down by this news. It seems like they want a quick cash in with the Theatrical versions - but realized they needed something to "re-release" around The Hobbit premiere - so, we get two versions yet again.

That's two words. Two words that have been mentioned in this threads more times than it needs to. There's more to this thread than the last page. Don't forget. If you're reading the last of 10 or 15 pages, chances are anything you have to contribute to it has been said before.

I'll pass on standard edition, have EE on DVD and it's far beter.
I guess this was said many times in this thread too, but I think forum is about more about stating opinions/sharing views than mandatory contributions to every thread you post in.

unfortunately, fellowship of the Ring theatrical cut was almost three hours then the Extended was over three hours, then the Two Towers was three hours exactly, Extended was almost four, king was 3hr 20min, extended was over four. Now please make note that I watch movies from beginning to end with end credits. seamless branching would work, but the problem is that you want an HD track, extras, and both cuts, if I'm not mistaking Blu-ray can hold only a few hours. I'm thinking that ether the studio or PJ made the right chose on the release. but that's just me. By the you should be more consearnd about The audio track, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WB HEAR. We need that HD track for the three Rings moives.

My thoughts exactly, Barbie-Shrimp.

Honestly, I don't think WB and NL has thought this through. The people who have already upgraded to Blu-ray are serious movie buffs, not casual watchers of films. Only a casual fan of film would buy the TE, so I really don't see them making much profit. I've already triple dipped, but there's no way I'm buying the TE again. (Well, unless it's got some good, never-before-seen bonus features. ) I will however, rent the TE trilogy from Netflix to see how the AQ and PQ are.
