Films that cause that much of an outbrust are usually some of the most interesting movies.

Se7en would be awesome, but it's probably Mysterious Object at Midnight. Also, I'm skeptical on Arsenic and Old Lace. I was just talking about how much that film needs a great Bluray release, and I would be stoked for it. But I'm not sure.

Yes, if Salo can makes its way onto Criterion, then why not Sixteen Candles. I always placed them in the same boat.

I can do with the upgrade for Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles and nothing else for 2017.

But Stalker is great too, even if it was expected already. And if the mystery box is Mysterious Object at Noon, that's also a cool addition, even if I was meaning to get the Second Run release.

[Show spoiler]That would be the single funniest release if that ever happens.

Uh, "Salò" is a multi-layered work of art.

"Sixteen Candles" is a movie where nearly every male character is a douchey rapist-in-training** made by people who thought that the material was hilarious and acceptable.

(SPOILERS)

[Show spoiler]Actually, you could argue the guy who tricks an (extremely inebriated!) woman into having sex with him by making her think he's her boyfriend is a bonafide rapist. But I guess because after she finds out the truth she's okay with it and that makes it alright? Whatever you say, Hughes.

UPDATE: Unless you were being facetious, in which case, ya gots me! haha

to each his/her own and i certainly respect your opinion but...have you seen other 80's movies? have you seen other older movies? context is everything.

NOT saying that it makes anything okay but you know, there's way worse out there (weird science for example). and probably worse in the collection.

Nah man, rewatch that when you can. It's INCREDIBLY sexist and rapey. Plus after seeing it I discovered there's dozens or articles out there proclaiming the same thing.

No problem! I think "mondo vision" will be releasing it, but they usually take years between each release so I dont expect it to be released anytime soon. Meanwhile you should check Possession if you havent seen it...similar level of craziness.

I was born in the early 80s. I've seen hundreds of 80s movies in my life. And yes, movies from that decade weren't the most progressive or enlightened obviously. But I'm just saying, "Sixteen Candles" is surprisingly one of the worst of the bunch. I found it anti-charming and in fact repulsive in how all its characters comport themselves.

Anyways, I don't wanna be a broken record (probably already crossed that line). I'm surprised Criterion is including it. That's all.

So, "Buena Vista Social Club", that should be pretty awesome eh?

I can't be the only one who wasn't expecting to see a heated discussion about Sixteen Candles on this thread today.

Wait, so the scatological Salo is "multi-layered art", but Sixteen Candles is repulsive and sexist?

Salo was just an excuse for the perverted Pasolini to see young naked boys.
