I might bite on Ali for $3 even though I didn't love the movie and dislike Mann in general, but how do we know which cut it is?

157 min., according to VUDU. There are now so many cuts of this film that I have no idea which one that is.

This appears to be the theatrical cut. The wiki page for this movie says there's already been a blu for Ali in a couple of European countries. Also, I looked on This or That Edition for the director's preference and he's quoted as saying "it's more complete and moves better" in favor of the director's cut. But for $3 I'll probably just stick with the hdx since it looks to be the theatrical cut either way and that's the version I'm used to anyway.

Darn, was hoping it was the new cut or at least the DC. I already have the theatrical version on DVD (in a 2-pack with The Greatest).



Not as good as HDX, I suppose, but good enough for me since it's a movie I like but don't love.

Depending on what people say about the new cut, I might upgrade to Blu when the price is right.

This was going to be a pass for me, but now I'm eager to see the new cut. As I posted earlier, I always felt that this movie was too long. It'll probably still be too long for me at 151 minutes, but I'm sure I'll like it better. I know that it's sacrilegious to say this, but I wish he would do the same to Heat.

Ali always felt too long to me by virtue of the fact that it felt too episodic and unfocused; I definitely don't feel that way about Heat, love it as much as when I first saw it at the end of 1995, no further editing needed.

Does anyone own the longer cut of Ali on DVD? What was added or changed? I have the theatrical Blu but I remember a extended or directors edition was released ad well with yellow on the cover.

My impression; I immediately felt that the director's cut was better than the theatrical cut when I purchased this package all those years ago. It fills in the gaps a bit better and frankly, just flows better than the theatrical cut, which I still like. But, if you ask me which one I'd watch, no question, I'm going with the director's cut.

If this release is not the director's cut, I'll probably pass on it. That DVD had a real good transfer.

Not having the feature commentary ported over from the director's cut is a BIG let down.
I guess this is another new cut and that is why, but it still hurts. Lol

Although few posts up someone says the film in vudu is listed as 157 minutes. I'm not sure this blu ray actually has a new cut.

Watching this now. So far, opening 15 minutes are exact to the 2004 director's cut. Gorgeous transfer too.
