Just watched this excellent release. My only technical critique would be the balance in level between the sountrack and the dialog.
The non-dialog parts can be dramatically over powering with a good dynamic system to the point of annoyance. It is not that these two over lap each other, but if you adjust the volume for the dialog, some parts are painfully loud when the other sound kicks in. As an audio engineer myself, I would have offered a reduced dynamic track as an alternate. Adding level compression to reduce the peaks and valleys to provide a more cohesive experience on a lossless track. The audio itself was clear and the picture was excellent (on a 100 inch projection screen) |

I screened this tonight. Great movie and a great disc. I didn't have a problem with the dynamics, but I like that kind of soundtrack loud. The film is jam packed with unlikely coincidences, but it all plays out fine because the visuals and performances make it all believable. Crawford is fantastic!

Last night, I watched my Cohen Media Blu-ray of Sudden Fear.
Joan Crawford (Mildred Pierce) stars as a wealthy playwright who falls head over heels with an actor, played by Jack Palance (City Slickers, Ripley's Believe It or Not television series), and quickly marries him. Trouble ensues, however, when she finds out that the actor's feelings toward her might not be entirely genuine, especially since he is still involved with an old girlfriend, and since he stands to come into a lot of money from her estate in the event of her death. One of my favorite classic actresses, Gloria Grahame (In a Lonely Place, It's a Wonderful Life) is at her sexiest, sleaziest, and slimiest as the husband's old girlfriend. Sudden Fear is one of the better woman-in-distress film noir movies out there, and the final moments in the shadowy alleyways of nighttime San Francisco are brilliant. I assume that most of you who are reading this own the Rolling Stones album, Exile on Main St. The still of Joan Crawford on the album sleeve is taken from Sudden Fear. This Cohen Media Blu-ray transfer looks beautiful, and it soars miles above my old Kino DVD. In fact, I never imagined that a suitable Blu-ray transfer would ever happen, so I'm pleased to report that I was wrong. The commentary track is quite informative and fun as well. |

I have the DVD and it's of the worst Public Domain quality compared to the Blu-ray. For $9.99 it's a steal. Any Noir fan should pick it up at that price.

Hardly a favorite of mine but for $9.99 I'd be a fool to pass it up.

Oh, that's her shoulder...
I watched my Cohen release of this film yesterday and thought it was a very solid noir. Joan Crawford is wonderful in another role that re-defined her career. Jack Palance killed it and Gloria Grahame is always in too-good-to-look-away territory. Quote:
The commentary by Jeremy Arnold is so good that it almost makes up for the lack of any other supplements (outside of the trailer). Overall, a great release, and such a good film that I'd consider double dipping one day on a UK release that expands on the bonus features. (lookin' at you, Indicator and Eureka!) In the meantime, thanks CMG! |

Wow had no idea it dropped to 9.99 that was a steal!
However even at 15.00 its still a great price. I used to own the old Kino Video DVD and I think they only had access to a really bad video master because it was a macroblocked mess, it was truly unwatchable. This new BLU is a MUST OWN. |

If these screen shot comparisons don't help with adding this BLU-RAY to your collection, nothing will.
http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a...105529&i=3&l=0 I always knew that old DVD was one of the worst looking transfers ever. |
