Question about uncompressed PCM on Blu-ray

This statement brought about a test as I am using an optical cable into my receiver from my PS3. So, I'll just give the HDMI alone a try. It failed miserably. So I started going through everything to find out why I had video but no audio. After much playing around I finally grabbed the receiver manual. Okay, I'm really not a manual kind of guy. In the manual it stated that if you hooked up HDMI into the receiver then out to the TV, only the TV speakers would work. I'm trying desperately to figure out the logic behind this decision by Sony?

Is this normal or did I simply purchase a piece of crap STR-DG800 receiver?
