It looks like textbook Oscar bait.

In other news, I want to watch La La Land until my eyes bleed.

If I only watched La La Land until my eyes bled, I wouldn't have made it past that opening number.

I think there's tons of great movies out there that fall into the "Oscar bait" category, so I certainly wouldn't dismiss it because of that solely. I've heard great things about Hidden Figures from others I know. It's not the kind of movie I feel I need to see in theaters, or right away, but certainly I'm going to give it a watch one day to form my own opinion of it.

I think she's gaining momentum. Emma Stone is probably still the favorite in the category, but of the four acting awards, it seems to be accepted that she is the softest favorite, so if there are any surprises on Oscar night, that seems like the most likely one.

It is a bit by-the-numbers but is done with so much style and heart that it transcends expectations, or at least it did for me. I highly recommend.

Meryl Streep will probably win again, considering she shouldn't have even been nominated when you look at some of the snubs (Amy Adams was considered the frontrunner for the WIN before the nominations were released). Huppert would definitely be my vote.

So Filmstruck finally adds Chromecast support, but does not support the first gen stick.. which is the only app I've ever seen do that. It connects and has the logo but when you play a movie you get a pink screen.

It's like they don't want us to use this service.

I shouldn't have to buy a new chromecast or a firestick just for one app.

They better not pull this with Roku and say Roku 4 only.

Ridiculous

I feel like for Streep to really have a shot, Hugh Grant (who was an early frontrunner to win supporting actor) would've gotten the nomination, in that weird way where Oscar victory rubs off on other actors. The only person that I see having any positive momentum right now is Huppert, and a lot of times a close Oscar race will just boil down to timing. Streep/that movie seem to have faded a bit, La La Land is starting to feel the backlash (but, I believe, too late to have a significant impact), Loving unfortunately just stalled out completely.

But I think this is a year where two strong indie contenders (Huppert & Portman) cancel each other out and the more popular and mainstream "La La Land" coasts to Best Actress. I think the same in Best Picture (but for Moonlight and Manchester). But Huppert is gaining a lot of steam -- I think the race is, can they get enough voters to watch the movie before voting day?

Streep isn't winning, and Adams was never the frontrunner.

I'm hoping that La La Land wins most of its categories. The rest of the movie never quite maintains the momentum of the fantastic opening sequence, but it's still an excellent film and it's great CinemaScope eye candy across the board.

I'll probably miss the actual Academy Awards ceremony this year, as I usually do every year, because all of the limousine liberalism at these things can be headache-inducing after a while, and I'm sure that this one will be 10 times worse. I'll be sending some good thoughts to my favorite nominees, though.
[Show spoiler]For the record, I didn't vote for Trump, but I nonetheless won't be able to stomach all of the political speeches at this year's event.

I hope I didn't sound too negative on the movie. I think Moonlight is a much better film, and Manchester might be better as well, but La La Land was very good and I enjoyed it much more than I expected to. The only category I am actively rooting against it in is screenplay; the script is fine, but it doesn't deserve an Oscar, especially over Manchester.

I believe it only works on the latest Apple TV aswell.

I own an older Roku too so I'm a bit worried now.

Yes but I'm anti-Apple.

I have the newest Roku 3 Streaming stick that I bought a few months ago after my old one crashed. It's just asinine that Filmstruck is the only app I know of that doesn't support the first gen Chromecast stick. It's not like it's 4k or anything so I don't get it.

I'm a man of principal, I didn't get the Roku 4 just because VUDU wants to be stingy with which devices get their UHD right now. (Again it would be for one app).

Well said. It has become so terribly nauseating, actually.

Interesting.
[Show spoiler] I found the opening two numbers to be almost unbearable, but once Gosling and Stone start hanging out the movie really improved. If I didn't have my wife with me, I don't know if I'd have stayed past the beginning.

I'm starting to thing that these companies are only offering Filmstruck on their latest models to, well, make us buy the latest models. :/

Mubi recently launched on Roku and is working fine on my stick, so I'll try to stay optimistic.

Hidden Figures is so easily written off as Oscar bait while La La Land, a film about how much Hollywood is so in love with itself, isin't Oscar bait? Even though it's clearly the front runner for best picture? How much more Oscar bait can you get?

Okayyyyy

Also gonna throw out this wild idea: Oscar bait films can also be great films.

That would be dumb on Filmstruck's part. It was odd enough launching on Amazon fire stick only.

But by year end they will be on Roku/PS4/XB1 and possibly Samsung TV's as well.

I'll continue doing my trick of casting the full browser screen for now until we see how Roku pans out in "spring 2017"
