The firefly series would never be found on Netflix. What many fans don't realize is that Fox Studios owns the rights to the firefly TV series. The movie rights are something different. Netflix couldn't produce a firefly series because of this. Josh Whedon has said that one of the reasons why he didn't return to bring back the series in the past was because Fox owns the rights to the series, including home video and digital rights.

The studio execs know full well about the potential behind firefly, much in the same way as how they own the rights to the first Star Wars movie. The only way Netflix of Hulu could ever produce a new firefly series is if they licensed the rights from Fox. With new interested from David Madden, it looks like they could be talking to Josh Whedon about a possible reboot for the series.

Before anyone asks, it's true that SyFy broadcasted the series on their network but that SyFy had acquired some limited rebroadcast rights to the original series.
