Felix Farmer’s (Richard Mulligan) latest movie flops – and lots of Hollywood types spring into action. Agents are called. Lawyers are retained. Statements are issued. It’s what master comedy director Blake Edwards calls “Standard Operating Bull,” the subject of his gleefully satiric S.O.B.

Julie Andrews is a wholesome superstar about to alter her image…radically. Aiding and abetting the madness are William Holden, Robert Preston, Robert Vaughn, Shelley Winters, Loretta Swit and more. Dialogue crackles like fat in a fire, gags range from dead-on deadpan to comedic broadsides, insights bristle and sting. Nothing standard here: S.O.B. is extraordinary.

Oh great. Julie Andrews boobies in glorious Hi Def. I wonder if she ever regrets doing this film?

She doesn't seem to if the Graham Norton interview from a couple years ago is any indication.

Wha? Really? It was pretty (in)famous in its day because squeaky clean Julie Andrews bares her breasts, but it's also a semi-autobiographical scathing attack on Hollywood by Blake Edwards.

I first saw a portion of S.O.B. as a pre-teen, back in the very early '80's. I didn't have cable at the time, but saw it at a friend's house on HBO; I'm guessing the film was in rotation at the time.

I primarily remember seeing the famous JA "bare boobs" scene, and my friend's parents being shocked. I'm glad my parents weren't there, or else I'm sure I would have gotten in trouble for seeing this - LOL.

I re-watched the regular DVD a while back, and it's a great film with a lot of skin - and not just the JA character I agree the print really needs an upgrade. The Blu will be much appreciated.

This New York Times review is thorough and, I think, accurate. Edwards and Andrews were really firing on all cylinders at that time: "10" came out just a couple of years earlier and Victor/Victoria was the very next year. Here's the review:

I didn't care much for S.O.B when it was first released but I may give it another ago. It could be one of those films that age.

And besides any film with Shelley Winters playing a lesbian is worth a revisit. The shoot with her talking on the telephone and a young doll sitting on her bet is priceless.

It's been ages since I've seen it, but I think I remember Robert Vaughn in bra & panties in one scene. What a great cast, & a very funny film.

There are two types of people: those who remember Julie Andrews ripping off her top and exposing her breasts, and those who remember Robert Vaughn wearing a bra and panties, and that's what makes the world a wonderful place!

Movie got mixed reviews when opened...RT is useless on older movies as a tiny fraction of reviews are counted, not the vast majority of critics.

That said it's worth a look of you are an Edwards fan and know the backstory of the film. If you dont, you might wonder what the point of it is.

Great movie. Richard Mulligan steals the show as Felix.

Sadly, it's among the lesser known of his (at the time, mainly labelled as a stinkeroo) but it's a near-masterpiece comedy, one of the most lucid allegories on Hollywood and cinema tout court. This year, WAC are doing great.

Glad to see some love for S.O.B. here. I've been a big fan since it's original release

My two favourite Blake Edwards films have been released by WAC, The Great Race & S.O.B.

I'd love, That's Life! (1986), but I don't know who owns that one.
