The good news is coming from the new Oppo 203 where even though the subtitle settings-mode shows French and a pop-up bar keeps saying the disc won't let the player change this setting, there is no subtitles showing up.
Don't know if it's because of the beta-test firmware I'm using that eliminates 3D micro-stutter on the new player or not, but it sure is great to see the complete 2.35:1 image and no forced subtitles.

The first subtitle track is meant to play with the French-dubbed audio, and it only shows translations of words that are onscreen- but the first audio track is also the French track. If you switch the audio to English, again only possible through the menu on the original disc, it will also turn on the full French subtitles. Copying the disc can strip out the button lock-outs (though oddly you still have to manually chapter-skip through the opening trailers, the Menu button still won't work) but Oppo players also let you move the subtitles down a bit if you can't make a copy, so at least they're less intrusive.
