Default Collection Sorting

I was just curious about this as it popped in my head as I was putting a Blu-ray back on my shelf. How do you organize your movies? To be more specific, if you have multiple movies in a franchise that start with different letters, how do you organize them? I myself go by the first movie in the franchise. For instance, Dark Knight will sit side by side with Batman Begins as Quantum of Solace will sit beside Casino Royale. Some sequels are just numbered and are easily placed, but how do the rest of you handle non alphabetical sequels?

I sort strangely. Right now I only have a lil Blu collection, and it is sorted by company/case size. This is sort of how I have my other standard DVDs arranged as well. It annoys others haha.

Same as. First movie in the franchise, followed by the next release etc. What do you do if they bring a prequel out though

I generally sort alphabetically, even with sequels. So Quantum of Solace will be in the Q section. The only time I don't sort by movie title is if it's a box set in which case it gets sorted alphabetically by whatever is the name of the Box set, i.e. Bond Blu-ray collections 1&2 are aphabetized under Bond. TV Series, Documentaries and PS3 games have seperate sections also alphabetized.

I keep going back and forth on that. For a while I had everything alphabetized no matter if it was part of a collection or not. So, Live Free or Die Hard was under L not D. Then I started grouping things so that Live Free or Die Hard was considered Die Hard 4. The problem for me, is that when thinking of it, I always seem to pick the opposite of the way I have it. So, if I've got Live Free or Die Hard under the D's, my first instinct will be to look in the L's and vice-versa. So, it seems to be a no-win situation for me. The Bond movies are another example. I'd prefer to have them all together but I kept looking in the wrong section when doing that.

Also, for a while I had the documentaries, TV shows and special interest type blu-rays separate from the movies but now I've got everything together in alphabetical order.

I do the same. I find it more aesthetically pleasing to sort this way. I can always find my movies fine.

I do the same thing I did with DVDs because I have so many DVDs, they will get "lost" if I don't figure out what I've seen recently...........

So here's what I do....

I keep T.V. series and Music/concert discs together.... (not an issue for me right now with blu-ray, but I have probably 80+ Concert/music DVDs, so it became an issue there)

Then... for the rest of the movies, other than "Sagas" or boxed sets like Friday the 13th etc.... I put the most recently watched movies to the bottom/Left most point on the shelves....... so over time, if I check the top/right most sections, I know what movies I haven't seen in a long time

All the shelves were in a closet in a spare room... for space/asthetic reasons

alphabetically for me regardless of movies like The Dark Knight or Quantom of Solace. that way if u want a movie, there's no guessing on where it is.

i have contemplated organizing by genre and then alphabetically but have never made the commitment to reorganize almost 400 movies.

I sort by style starting by my favorites, so Stars Wars together, superheroes together...and so on, look's a bit strange when looking at it but I can pull out a movie with my eyes close

I think sorting in alphabetical order is the way to go, but I do keep my concert BD's seperate from movies. And I think I do so because those are the ones I watch most often.

As ones collection grows it makes sense to organize in a format that suits you for easier and quicker selection of what you want to watch. Hell, if I didn't have my extensive LP collection organized in some fashion (alphabetical by artist), it'd take me forever to find a particular album.

Bottom line....organization is good!

I sort mine by studio, my favorite studios to my least favorite, and then alphabetically within them. Very picky I know.

Alphabetically, with a few exceptions.

1) TV shows/documentaries/concerts/horror movies/Julia Roberts movies are each sorted separately.

2) Batman and Bond movies are under B's, and arranged in order of release, Man with No Name Trilogy is listed under M, instead of breaking those movies up, things like that.

3) BD movies are kept separate, but are in alphabetical order as well (except for Planet Earth, and a few concert BDs).

My only annoyance is the James Dean and Jimmy Stewart collections I have, but I just keep those at the very end, since I don't feel like breaking them apart, and don't want to throw them in somewhere alphabetically.

Anyone that seriously has problems finding their movies needs some help. Even a completely unsorted collection of a few hundred movies wouldn't take longer than 1 minute to find anything, and if you can't spare that time, maybe you shouldn't be watching a movie anyway.

I just used this sites "my collection" link to organize alphabetically. There are a few exceptions though.
-Box sets like Heroes, Matrix, and Band of Brothers on a separate shelf.
-Steelbooks are on another shelf separately.
