Default Ziff-Davis considering online-only future for EGM

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/ne...future-for-eg/

Quote:
As we near the end of a year that saw outspoken EGM editor-in-chief Dan "Shoe" Hsu resign his post, The New York Times quotes publisher Ziff-Davis as "considering" a course of action that would take the prominent print mag online only. The news comes in an article about ZD's decision to make a similar move with 27-year-old flagship publication, PC Magazine.

Ziff-Davis chief executive, James Young, revealed to the paper that an online-only future for EGM is a possibility, but that the publisher "would not make a decision before the end of the year." Recent months have seen the departure of staffers from 1UP, EGM's online sister publication, and a frank admission of the decreasing viability of games-related print media by 1UP editorial director, Simon Cox.
kind of sad

I hate both those magazines...

GI -> I never agree with any of there reviews so I find the magazine worthless.
EGM -> I use to subscribe to this, but it always lacked information.

In this day and age magazine should die. Everything in a magazine is old by the time it hits the news stand.

The only magazines I loved was ones with demo discs... Having a disc full of a collection of demos, was a easy way to install and uninstall demos quickly based on a mood.. I wish game discs came with a collection of full games.. lol..

That is true. also, i used to subscribed to the official PS magazine back in the day just for the demo discs every month. but now you can get those through the PS store, so there's not much point there either.

Well we've already seen stuff like this happen before to CVG (a British games mag if you didn't already know), but I will miss the old days when video games mags were all the rage. I just think that online reviews lack a real presentation to keep me hooked compared to mags.

Well the official PlayStation magazine still puts demos on a BD disc. At least those demos don't eat up your hard drive.

I would rather have the demos on BD instead of taking up my HDD space.

It's harder to read an online only magazine while taking care of well, you know where you read magazines the most.

In any age magazines were considered old by atleast three weeks to a month if not more due to accumulating data and revisions but its fun reading hobbiest type magazines and sometimes even the advertisements can be enjoyable on whats new going to retail.

I dont think looking at a monitor or leaving the pc on all day or night to read blogs is that enticeing ether and outside on the porch or whatnot i prefer a magazine(s) while listening to local radio or dxing.

Though if magazines like novels were produced on sd-cards for electronic book readers that would produced a kind of new and exciting way to enjoy ones favorite mag.
