I just noticed a interesting credit during the opening of the 1935 version of A Tale of Two Cities. Something like "Arranger of the Revolutionary sequences" Val Lewton and Jacques Tourneur. I only knew of their association at RKO. I do hope Criterion will release more of the Lewton films especially my favorite I Walked With a Zombie.

I think it is streaming on Netflix.

wife out of town.. maybe tonight.
I snagged a copy of Punch Drunk Love from the library the other night and watched it yesterday for the first time in 15 years. I liked it. Memory was telling me that it was an inconsequential entry into PTA's filmography, but a second watch proved that wrong. I still don't know if it seems right in the top half of the TSPDT's 1000 greatest films, but it is a unique and well made film. I really like what Ebert said about it:

"I feel liberated in films where I have absolutely no idea what will happen next. Lena and Barry are odd enough that anything could happen in their relationship."

That is exactly how I feel when watching a lot of Godard. ...and relative to so many films in which you feel you know more or less what is going to happen, PDL is a refreshing film.

Stylized whimsy is how I'd describe it. Don't sell it short is what I'd advise. I recommend it.

While I was visiting my mother this morning, we watched That Hamilton Woman on Turner Classic Movies.

Criterion needs to upgrade this movie to Blu-ray right now.

Not only do we get to gaze on the beauty of Vivien Leigh, but we also see one of the coolest naval battles in cinema.
The movie is sort of a bummer, but such is life.

Watched Magnificent Obsession yesterday.

What kind of bizarre aspect ratio is 2.00:1? Never seen a movie in that ratio before.

That said, this might actually become my favorite Sirk. It's even more melodramatic than his usual stuff, but if you let yourself get wrapped into it, it's rather moving, and surprisingly non-Christian spiritual for a 1950s film.

I also thought the
[Show spoiler]time skip
in the last 3rd of the film really added greatly to the spiritual angle, and gave it an "epic" dimension that made the Rock Hudson character's personal and spiritual growth some real heft and weight.

It has been called SuperScope and a few films in the past used it like Vera Cruz, and The Dirty Dozen. There is also a more recent movement pushed by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro to use it as rhe standard for everything. Many Netflix shows are being presented in thst AR including Hkuse of Cards, Stranger Things, and A Series of Unfortunate Events

At this point, I can't see it occurring on any day but Tuesday the 28th, for the reasons you mentioned. I don't mind it taking place so late in the month as it will allow me to add Mildred Pierce to my order, a title which A, is one of my most anticipated HD upgrades and 2, is the one which will raise my order total to the amount necessary to trigger the $50 GC.

Vittorio Storaro even went so far as reframing some of his movies home video release in 2:00, off the top of my head, Apocalypse Now DVD, and The Last Emperor.

I'll even venture a guess and say that BEFORE will be the promo code.

I recently saw it as well. It's grown on me since and that definitely has to do with the way the film commits to those themes of penance and forgiveness. It's a very bold film.

My personal favorite at the moment is Tarnished Angels. It's probably not on par with the other 1950s films most consider to be his best, but the setting is just so wonderful and it has one of my all time favorite monologues.

Great movie for both of you to watch. IMO Leigh was at her most beautiful in this film, so stunning. Just a few months ago I caved in and ordered the Criterion DVD from Barnes & Noble since I was tired of waiting for an upgrade. Owl, I'm with you on this, a blu-ray upgrade is definitely warranted and needed.

Last night my wife asked to watch 12 Angry Men! She loves jury duty, so I had mentioned the movie to her a while back. We were looking for something to watch and she said, "How about that 12 Angry Men movie?" She loved the film, and she recognized some of the actors... especially John Fiedler, who she recognized immediately as the voice of Piglet.

Changing subjects, I'm getting my list set and ready for the flash sale. I've got $75 in gift cards burning a whole in my inbox. Boxsets here I come!

Not to continue my streak of moaning posts, but I'm currently watching The Great Beauty.

It's an excellent film and undoubtedly the best film of 2013. However, the Blu-ray has not stood the test of time, in my opinion, and the grain is incredibly noticeable to the point where the grain is shaky and ultimately distracting.

Again, I never noticed any of these issues before but I'm pretty sure this 4K TV is making everything much more evident.

This reminds me of when I first got an HD display and tried playing one of my favorite DVD's, which looked fine on my old display, and realized it now looked like complete crap

Are you using default out of the box settings? Sounds like sharpness may be on too high perhaps (or some sort of motion interpolation).

Stray observation: the dancehall scene in 45 Years is awfully similar to the one in Spielberg's Always. A dance set to "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" which serves as a cathartic moment for both relationships. Granted, the one in 45 Years is probably much more bleak.
