That's what I was thinking, I remembered a thread about this when it was first unveiled. I also remember there are huge limitations to it. It requires an HDMI connection in the first place for the best features, so it goes to an HD TV, so why bother with it instead of Blu-ray? I don't get settling for near HD instead of FULL HD.

It also can only do a couple of the features at once and not everything if I remember correctly.

awwww they aint that bad! My old sammy dvd player snuffed it within months, the samsung service people sent out some scummy looking chav in a battered white van , the dvd player left in box and came back in newspaper but it worked fine, and it was all in a few days. Not sure what there policy is on TV's though, if my plasma goes tits up and needs fixing they wont be leaving me with no TV...

Toshiba got a 'good' write-up in HCC magazine for their upscaler

Why give up? They are trying to get as much out of DVD as they can before it goes away. Personally I don't think they will ever adopt BD. Financially it wouldn't be good for them. Hardware price erosoin has already reduced profit margins so low as to make developing their own player unattractive. So they are left with rebadging someone elses player, but I don't think they will do that.

how is it stupid? hey i love blu as much as the next guy, i hated hd-dvd as much as the next guy....

at the dn fo the day Toshiba is a company in business to make money, and this will make them some big $$$$. number one because a lot of people are having a hard time coming to terms with having to buy their movie collection on blu again. Number 2 until blu ray players prices drop, then people will unfortunately go with a cheaper option.

so it is smart for toshiba to keep pushing this from a business standpoint

old news. and i'm still fascinated by the weird obsession that people on this forum have with Toshiba long after the end of the format war.

Yeah, this is probably Toshiba's best move at the moment, since DVD is still doing relatively well, and Toshiba would be wise to try to shake consumers away from going Blu.

At least they're going with XDE instead of that SUC(K) garbage. Because why watch it now when you can wait several hours instead, right?

SUC is still coming apparently!

I don't think Toshiba can stop the Blu-ray train now. They spent close to $1bn on HD DVD trying to frustrate the market and turn people away from Blu-ray, and that didn't work...

I don't think they can either, but if they're going to try, this is their best option.

Plus, at least this stuff has some cool commercials.

Toshiba's own conscience is telling them to turn blu but they keep resisting because they have too much pride.

Humble yourself and kneel before blu!

They are risking their entire CE channel with these moves.

Think about it, the retailers know that matching brands is a common prejudice of the consumer. And the brands are offering bundle incentives with their HDTV. Toshiba is taking up floor space without being able to offer a high perceived value bundle incentive, or a high margin product.

And for disc sellers (studios and retailers), they are confusing the consumer and possibly hurting overall disc sales. DVD is on an inevitable downward trend. But, Blu-ray has been keep the overall growing.

Fighting Blu to prop up DVD may just cause consumer confusion, and result in a slow-down in overall purchases.

Corporations have long memories. That sort of sabotage will not be forgiven any time soon.

Yes...... it's completely assinine! Why would we want to see improvements in DVD upscaling technology? Now that almost %10 of US homes have a blu-ray player.... DVD is totally obsolete!

I know you're right, but I think Toshiba has two things going for it, and both rely on J6P:

1. If they say "1080p," J6P will think it's the same as Blu-ray.
2. If they say it works with DVD and that you don't have to repurchase your library, J6P won't know that BD players will also play and upscale DVDs.

If they play these two cards, I can definitely see them doing at least some damage to BD, especially for the holiday season.

Don't get me wrong, though; I know XDE is bullplop (and I consider the other thread where they revealed SUC and our reaction to it to be thread of the year), but I can see where Toshiba might be trying to go with this.

so what happens in 2-3 years when studios are not releasing DVDs any more? On the other hand can you explain why it is better to continue with DVD players that have almost 0 profit, and not go with something that might have "price erosion" but still has healthy profits? on the other hand how much R&D does all these insane "upscaling" DVD players cost them and how much R&D is needed to go, for example, to sigma and ask them for a development kit?

Toshiba is selling this crap for 150 USD, I looked at a flier the other day and I could buy a Sharp or a Samsung player (on sale) for 198 CAD can you tell me why this 150USD is so much cheaper then 200$ CAD? can you tell me why you think 1080p on the box is important when at the end of the day the guy will see DVD and won't be able to watch BD? and what happens when he sees DVD player for 20$ beside the Toshiba for 150$ and 200$ for the BD players? why will he not care for 130$ more for the Toshiba DVD player when he can spend 50$ more and get a BD player?
