The purpose of having the black bars there is so you can see all of the picture, and not just the select zoomed in part. With DVD and 4:3 conventional TV's, you really didn't have to worry about black bars because it didn't matter- you were missing a ton of the picture anyways! Blu-ray doesn't have zoom in so you can enjoy all of the picture intended for you to see and experience all of it in high definition. Only select movies don't have black bars. It all has to do with the movie's aspect ratio and how it was filmed. Be glad there are black bars there! Some TV's offer the ability to resize the image so you don't lose any of the picture while filling the whole screen, but as I said, there are only a few that can do that. Even so, it may look stretched and unnatural.

Sure you can watch movies in OAR but is it really necessary to enjoy a movie? Ultimately its up to the consumer how he watches his movies. If he prefers to watch it without the blackbars and zoomed in, all the power to him. As long as he enjoys the movie, its perfectly fine. This goes the same for someone with a sound system. Sure, setting treble and bass to flat will leave the sound uncoloured and more to what the director intended but if the user wants more bass, is he restricted because that may not be what its suppose to sound like? Not trying to say that your wrong by any means, just trying to point out that people have preferences. I myself enjoy watching in OAR but my Dad prefers zoomed in.

Angry How about answering the question guys?

I'm gonna do this one last time:

1. I know what the black bars are and why they are there
2. I'm not new to HD, just Blu-Ray
3. I cannot use the aspect control on my television because it doesn't "zoom" the picture, it stretches the picture to fill the screen (for some reason) and is a pain to use anyway
4. my present DVD player allows me to zoom in on letterbox formats to get rid of the black bars, with the trade-off that I loose picture on the sides. I'm ordinarily not worried about the picture loss on the sides. I like to fill my screen.
5. My cable box allows me to do the same thing with HD content that has letterbox format and I have never noticed any loss in picture quality, even though my projector TV is only 720P.

The zoom/aspect control is pretty standard on DVD players. It is a feature I do not wish to give up. DOES THERE EXIST A BLU RAY PLAYER WITH THIS FEATURE?

For the love of God, can I just get an answer to that question and a little less speculation as to why I would want to do something so crazy/stupid?

Default Oppo BDP-83

The new Oppo BDP-83 is the only BD player at the moment that has full zoom and pan features for BD. Selling at USD500 in Amazon. Terrific pic processing and format compatibility at reasonable price. BUY!

I hear you buddy - there's a lot of people around here with a gigantic stick up their ass when it comes to Original Aspect Ratios and zooming, etc. It's up to every individual whether they give a sweet sh*t about the "Director's Vision" or not - for some reason, some people have taken it on as their own personal crusade.

Like you, I am also not satisfied with my television's "zoom" feature as it distorts the image - apparently there are a few players out there that do offer distortion-free "full-widescreen" options, but it's my understanding that the PS3 is not one of them.

Hi, i was looking for the answer to the same question; but I can categorically say that the PS3 does NOT have the option for zooming in to fill the 16:9 for Blu-Ray discs (or DVD for that matter).

My 50" has a zoom but it's crap and not even close to what I need.

The only way I can overcome this is copying your blu-ray to your hard drive, and...
1) either encoding it to a file the PS3 can read (video files -avi/mp4/mpg via USB or on it's HDD can be viewed as normal/actual/zoomed 16:9) or
2) connecting your computer to the TV and running it thru VLC player etc, and zooming that way.

Either way it's a huge pain in the ass! It's a massive oversight for Blu-ray/PS3 etc for people who actually want to use their whole screen and not ~65% of it!

Would be a nice feature. I have a handful of non-anamorphic DVDs that I'd like to be able to zoom up.

I would have to assume that the Oppo BD 93 has a zoom feature as the Oppo BD 83 had that same feature, I can only see companies adding features to newer players.

See the Oppo link in my signature.

Oppo has discontinued the BD83 but the BD93 is the same price.

I see some people don't understand why we want a zoom function.
I watch a lot of 4:3 dvds on my LCDs, bikes and cars dvds, concerts dvds, porn dvds, planes dvds, animals dvds... and more.
there are some bars on the left and right side, sometimes up and down too, ps3 need a zoom fonction for these dvds.
