Sooooooo... had my last audition with the Dyn’s and DALI’s yesterday. Used X18’s as L/R and X24 center, and Opticon 5’s for L/R and a Zensor 3 as an upright center channel since they had no other Opticon speakers. Powered by a NAD T758 receiver and just demoed the front three and sub with no surrounds.

Took in a couple movies, and a TV series to test out some well recorded dialogue and went back and forth a couple times between each system. In the end, I found the Opticon system gave me the presentation I was looking for. They were more clear and lively and open and gave more of an emotional connection to whatever I watched. Going back and forth, it’s like the DALI’s wiped away a layer of haze and brought out more texture and detail and also seemed a bit more refined with rougher/busier movie scenes. The Dynamics of the DALI’s was also one of the reason’s I liked them better, you could hear the buildup in loud moments of the films more easily and they had more impact. Just more engaging overall. I didn’t find the DALI’s to be bright or harsh, but the Dyn’s are still a bit smoother, however the bit of improvement in detail and clarity and liveliness that the DALI’s have was more important to me.

Long story short, I ended up ordering a pair of Opticon 1's. I didn’t want to fully commit to the DALI’s because I’m still looking at the Bryston’s as well, but since I loved the DALI’s so much with music I decided to get a pair of the 1’s and then break them in and test them out at home, and then finally get an in-home demo of the Bryston’s to compare to. Even if I like the Bryston’s more and I buy the front L/R and center channel from them, I will still keep the DALI’s and use them as surrounds and then when I really want to do some critical listening with 2ch music I will pull the DALI’s off the wall and set them up front. Will give me the best of both worlds I think.

In the end, basically it just came down to personal preference. Both Dyn's and DALI's are equally excellent speakers, and I can easily see how someone who wants a smoother more laidback sound would pick the Dyn's. So thank you to everybody (BigAl and Callas in particular) who gave me advice and shared their own experiences searching for their speakers... definitely made me more confident in getting to a conclusion,... well just about there!
Congrats!

Thanks guys, I'm really happy with them from the auditions and I'm pretty confident I'll be filling out the rest of the system with Opticon's after I get an in-home demo of the Bryston's.

Should have the Opticon's in the next 2 weeks, probably in the first week of March sometime and I will certainly post some pics then

Any idea when your Contour's are showing up Olivier? Had a chance to get the 520 up & running?

Congrats!!

I do like Dali as well. I always spy on the Opticons to see if they're available cheap on eBay maybe to use in the kids living room or upgrade the bedroom speakers. I am curious what the difference will be between the Dali Opticon 1s w/o the ribbon tweeter and the Opticon 5s with the ribbon tweeter.

Me as well. From any reviews I can find on Opticon systems, the 1's and 2's seem to keep up pretty well with the tower's that have the ribbon's used in the reviews. I would assume the ribbon's will give a bit more air and clarity/detail but I think the 1's will hold their own. The plan, if I go full DALI system, would be to get the Vokal center which has he ribbon, and then either a pair of 5's for L/R, or instead possibly two Vokal center's to use as L/R so I'd have 3 identical front speakers. The 1's would then go to surround duty.

My dealer actually thought it was a neat idea to do 3 Vokal's across the front when I mentioned it to him. He thought it would be good to match the front three exactly too, plus two Vokal's are $1000 cheaper than a pair of the 5's. The Vokal has the same 6.5" driver and dual tweeters as the Opticon 5 towers, and strangely the Vokal is actually rated a few Hz lower in extension.

How is it??

Im considering that receiver if I go brand new. Otherwise just get a Matantz 5010 from A4L.
I'll post my impressions on the MRX520 soon. So far very nice but I'll be more explicit later tonight.

Yeah, I have to second this... I called my dealer yesterday cause my Opticon's were supposed to be in, but he says there was a delay in shipping coming from Europe so maybe later next week they will arrive.

It's only another 1.5-2 weeks wait for me, but I can barely stand it. I don't understand how you've stayed sane waiting since October for yours.

Hi John sorry for this late response, I did not get the call I was expecting last week but I got it this Wednesday and actually the news was that my dealer has finally received my speakers and I will take delivery next week

Now I really am excited

The shipping weight was 47 Kg each speaker so 103 lbs although their net weight is 79 lbs per speaker.

Anyhow the small delay vs the actual expected delivery date is understandable as they probably were in transit for a couple of weeks so by the time they went to distributor from th boat to the Warehouse in the Port to distributor and finally to my dealer.

No I have not actually tried to sell the Sugden I might just give it as a trade in for my next Preamp/Amp combo, Still eying on a 250dr that has not sold yet in past 6 months so I am hoping an a few weeks from now I can put a deposit on it.

I would need Hi-Cap and Naim preamp eventually in that case as well as their IC cables so that will not come cheap but I will at least start with the amp.

It's not a done deal but I have not dished out Bryston Cubed series with a different preamp, Their cube series do receive rave reviews and are super transparent with an amazing sound stage. I am thinking the Naim will be smoother paired with a NAC272 and PSU upgrade later down the road for maybe the XP5.

Anyways I am thinking maybe I do not need streaming capabilities so i could get a NAC202 with PSU upgrade later, I find expensive 2700 for the hicap, maybe the flatcap for 1K less would be a good enough upgrade for me. That makes for a $5500 preamp which is a crap load of dough for me.

If going with a 202 get a 200 instead. If getting the 272 or 282 then get the 250. 272/250 would be nice and you could add a PS later. Could also look at Teddy Pardo PS for a much lower price and some say better performance. I'm thinking about adding one of those to my NDX. After I get a SN2 first.

Ok I know I would not have to get a PSU right away if I went with 200DR paired with 202 but besides that why should i get the 200dr rather than 250DR if i went with 202 preamp? Some Guys actually prefered the 250 over the 200 even paired with the 202 in the Naim forum.

There is a guy on Naim Forum had the 202, 250DR with HicapDR was best sounding combo with his Dalis. Better than 282 and 250 DR and better than 202 200DR combos all with the hicap DR.

yeah i heard of Teddy Pardo before I think you've mentioned them a few times and they appear to be 2.5 times cheaper than their Naim counterpart.

The thing is the N272 cost 7K US so here it's is nearly 10K for me since the Canadian dollar has gone down vs the USD. Not sure I am willing to spend that much on preamp.

Thanks John

I'm with you on the cost. It's expensive and some say you really need the PS on the 272 to make it sing. The 202/200 are made for each other plus the 200 can power the 282 if you wanted to ho that route. 250 can't. You could then add a PS and upgrade to 250 later if you needed the power. 202/250 seems a bit backward to me but I'm sure it would be nice too. It's just not the route I would start with but then again this is coming from a guy with a NDX into a Uniti 2 so what do I know.

Congrats on the new speakers. Looking forward to your thoughts on them.

Alright thanks.

Yeah Cause that was my tought to on 272 i would still need the PSU upgrade so might as well save 5K and go with 202 and still get 250DR which would require the PSU on the 202 if I went that route so I will do my due diligence and go to my Naim dealer and have a listen of a pair of Contour with 3 combos.

I know the intent of Naim is to have the 200 and 202 be meant to pair with each other but knowing they make it possible to go to the 250Dr with the 202 (PS Upgrade required) may not be a bad thing after all. I just don't want the 200 to run out of juice with those crazy inefficient speakers I have and will have. The Damn Fires are super power hungry. It may just be 10 watts but very good ones

Sell or trade the Forest and get the boxes you want. You can pick up the Forest later if you miss them that much which I doubt you will.

Audition the SN2 also. That may be all you need. Sone prefer it over the 202/200.

May I remind you they are no ordinary Forest Wish you could hve been able or you're able to audition them one day

Ok I'll put the SN2 on my audition list.
