Second, the Kino release will most likely have the remastered transfers and most of the extras from the DVD and Blu-ray (save for the TT commentary and the music only tracks). But I'll be keeping the original MGM DVD for the DTS track (which probably won't be on the Kino DVD) and because it was sourced from the laserdisc, the credit-less version of the Zero-X assembly sequence in Thunderbirds Are Go. Unless, if Kino can add that as an extra. |

I know it's a different format, and don't think I'm judging it's just I'm trying to wrap my head around why the need to buy something you basically already own on a lesser format. I still buy DVDs too, but not when it's something I already own on blu-ray.

For perspective, I have at least two different DVD copies each of both The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth in addition to their blu-ray releases (in Labyrinth's case, two of those) because I really enjoy those films. Some of us just like to have the various releases.

Very interesting. I wonder if there are more former TT sellouts in the pipelines of various labels. I was able to get a great deal on the TT Thunderbirds disc during a sale, but I hope that this is a great release by Kino for those who missed out.

I think we are going to see a lot of "old wine in new bottles" in the next few years. When the license runs out, it's dirt cheap for another label to pick it up and release it with a couple of new extras and try to get people to double dip. The problem is, these films are not the sorts of films you would re-watch often. I suppose a lower SRP might make a few people who didn't jump on it the first time around join the party, but honestly, how many of those people are there for a cult title like this?

Don't underestimate the popularity of the Thunderbirds. The US may not be as into them now as they were back in their heyday, but the UK and Japan love them.
Plus I remember last time I went to the Smithsonian Air and Space, they had one of the Thunderbirds DVDs in the giftshop. Wasn't expecting to see something like that there, so I picked it up. |
