I think that is part of it. I also think we have to factor in the attrition. We're all enthusiasts, in this camp and the HD-DVD camp. Some of them are true believers who will never concede. However a fair number of them can recognize death when they see it. The rational ones are just as in-tune as we are and they know what's happening more than the average guy on the street. The eagerness to buy has to be fading in those who are beginning to see the light.

I don't expect HD DVD will win a week in 2007 now. Which means never again
YTD is 67/33. We're already at 2:1.

I am very happily surprised by this news. I expected some HD DUD gain. Well next week will be interesting because Blu-ray released 0 movies this week. But I think the Fry's sale, the Amazon sale, the Walmart sale, the PS3 reduction, and the BDA 5 disc giveaway has really helped the cause. Plus the (PQ/SQ quality) crap that HD DUD is releasing lately does not help their cause any.

Perhaps we should ask all retail outlets to stop selling media/hardware for one week. If they did that I bet Blu-ray will still win for that week. HAHAHAHA

i expected better numbers. wasnt last week 70/30 with many more HD releases? what was released this week that set this curve? i was hoping we would break their final 30% down to the 20's...

It is the SI numbers that is going to drive future adoption of blu-ray. As long as the weekly numbers are above 50 for blu-ray, the YTD and SI numbers will keep getting larger in favor of blu-ray!

I'm so glad blu(e) is my fav color!

Actually no, If the weekly numbers went down to 51% blu and 49% HD-DVD, the YTD and SI numbers would start to go down as a result also.

Here's another thought, now that blockbuster is renting only blu-ray, there may be a tendency in some people to go out and rent a new release rather than buy it.

I'm sure the number crunchers would be able to factor that into the equation. One of the main reasons that Blockbuster made the decision was that Blu-ray rentals were much stronger than HD-DVD rentals in their stores by about the same margin that Blu-ray outsells HD-DVD. Anyway you slice it or dice it, it is a victory for the Blu team.

I am thinking that it gives more people a chance to rent and see the difference.
because i was the first to get a ps3 out of anybody i knew, so i did netflicks on a few movies and after that i started buying more movies than games. i also have shown 2 friends what blu is all about and they are starting there own collection and will not settle for less. people who own a ps3 know what blu-ray is but at $20+ for a movie they have to be convinced.

HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray, how do you expect the sales ratio to be for these movies?

I tell you what, it could well be very interesting reading on those numbers when released. No doubt both will be big sellers for both formats and in all honesty it COULD be closer than you might think.. don't forget... the "other" format has had next to nothing released lately so they've got to spend they're money on something.. it's known as putting all your eggs in one basket..

well, they just had 17 titles released a few weeks ago...

this could explain why they made it look so close last week

Even if people are renting more instead of buying BDs, it's still all good. While the Nielsen numbers may come down a bit, BB would know that the BD rental numbers are on the rise and will request for more titles from the studios. That in turn will get the studios to release more titles.

Of course, I don't think buyers will be renters overnight. The Nielsen will still show BD leading every week. Funny. You'd think they'd take back at least one week in 2007 but no...

Blu-ray has a VERY weak summer. It's very disappointing, actually.

They could have gone in for the kill, but instead, it's nothing but 300 and a bunch of crap.

Good point.

Anyone have any calculations/projections on how long it would take to reach SI of 2:1 at the current rate of weekly sales.

I think that would be a good milestone for the studios wrt abandoning hd-dvd.
