It is quite good. It uses Mpeg AVC with surprisingly low bitrates (almost never exceding 20 Mb/s), but it adds up to a satisfying Blu-ray transfer. Contrast is spot on, colours looking natural and black levels are quite good. There is no grain or electronic noise, but the sharpness and the level of detail could be better. The awesome panorama shots of nature like How the West was won or The Searchers are therefore out of its league. On a 10 Score the picture is rated 8 - which is quite good, i wasn't disappointed. I just hoped it would be an outstanding transfer, which it isn't - it very good, but not excellent.

They didn't use the original aspect ratio (2,20:1) but framed it in 2,35:1.

My review of dancing with wolves (if anybody is interested and understands german) will be published on bluraydisc.de today or tommorrow.

It is the long version which is the interesting one. I hope the long version comes to the French speaking countries of Europe soon

DANCES WITH WOLVES was filmed on 35mm stock in Panavision. The aspect ratio is correct at 2.35:1. The 2.21:1 ratio you refer to is the AR of the 70mm blow-up from 35mm elements that was made in the 1990s. The High Definition master used for the Blu-ray was made, as it should, from a 35mm element, and has therefore the correct AR.

I have a bunch of extra unopened copies of these that I am trying to get rid of for $35 shipped (or $30 each if you want more than one). If anyone wants a copy, please PM me. I am not trying to make a profit on them, just get rid of them.

Ethan

What an incredible release. I got this instead of the UK Dances, because I wanted 1) Kevin Costner director commentary! 2) the longest available cut.

And apparently 1) and 2) will only ever go together, because 1) was made to go with 2).

PQ and AQ are wonderful on this disc, and the artwork is superior to the UK by a long shot. Its finished like Dunbar's journal, with a thread of lace around the outside of the image, and on the inside the chapters are listed like a page in his journal, with a note from Dunbar and a nice drawing on the right under the disc.

Do you have anymore of the unopened copies left to sell? I'd like to pick 1 up since I have the Oppo region free now.

I'd like to get it ASAP if possible.

PM me how to pay you & get it.

Thanks!

Hi guys, I just got my copy today!

I'm so excited but I can't find "native dialogue" in the menus. Neither in the main menu or in the popup-menu. Can someone help me?

There is no option for "native dialogue". Audio Options are either German (Deutsche) or English (Englische) DTS-MA 7.1 (the top two options in "Spachen/Ton"), and then German sub-titles ("untertitel") or None ("AUS"), the bottom option in the menu. Choose Off/AUS, and you automatically get English subtitles when Native American language is spoken.
