I'd love a Toshiba Blu-ray player but I doubt they ever make one. I've had great success with their tvs.
As most folks here know, Toshiba has a ton of dvd patents so it is certainly in their best interest to keep the format alive. I expect them to drop the price of this XDE model to $50 soon. Just a hunch.

They are making a nice dollar on the DVD upscalers. And the R&D cost is minimal. Just playing around with software algorithms and scaler chips. Meanwhile they are selling them for $100 to $150 a pop. Hey, even Sony's still pandering the upscaling players trying to get squeeze the last dollar out of DVD.

DVD still makes sense. But if you think it is a nice dollar then you are mistaken. The issue is not the past but the future, sooner or later they will need to have a BD player and it does not make sense to skip the period when you can make money on it to wait around for when it is a commodity.

I know, but corporations are very shortsighted. They count their profits quarter to quarter.

Well, I think there is some merit in perfecting sd upscaling. I just think Toshiba has gone about it in a completely PR shooting-in-the-foot manner. They should still jump on the bandwagon with br, already, but they shouldn't restrict their sd upscaling efforts to just dvd playback. Hd programming is certainly becoming more prevalent in each and every year, but sd programming hasn't disappeared outright, just yet. I believe there is still a market to service that consumer feature (most likely in the form of a hdd/dvd recorder or tivo-style device). People will still have to deal with sd sources (disc media and broadcast)...might as well offer a solution that really excels in that area (better than the typical built-in scaler in an hd display or dvd recorder or cable set-top box).

Actually it was sarcasm. I don't understand why anyone would think that trying to improve upscaling technology is in any way a bad thing.

It's not, but at the expense of Blu-ray?

I would have no problem with XDE if it was just an extra feature to a Blu-ray player (like it should be) to make it into a premium product, but this is pointless, why buy a $150 DVD player. Especially since it isn't very good...

not all of them, but it is short sightedness that brought the US car manufacturing to where it is today. It is short sightedness that brought the US banking sector where it is today. wasn't that the point of some us? Toshiba is being very short sighted and even beyond short sighted where they will be hurting their currant finances and ultimetly screwing their company

In order to make money, they have to sell them first.

Well, cheap up scalers seem to be selling pretty well, in case you haven't noticed.

dvd sales have not been good the last couple years
and bd is almost 20% of all video sales and its only gonna get better.
the studio's have made clear they want dvd gone!
yet again tosh makes another stupid move making this player.
if i can see this dumb move why can't they!
i think they know dvd going south,so will they.
i can care less if they make a bd player or not,i would'nt buy one anyway

I don't see why people are so bent out of shape over Toshiba making an upscaling DVD player. Enjoy your Blu-ray players

I think because people would rather see Toshiba putting some effort into getting some Blu-ray players on the market but they seem so stubborn since their format failed.

I do see that point of view but there is still money to be made with dvds. It may only last a few more years but they are going to wring every dollar out of that format.

Well like I said I don't think anyone is telling them to stop making DVD players but now they are acting like Blu-ray doesn't even exist which is childish and stubborn. But hey it looks like Blu-ray is doing just fine without them.
