Default Total Spending on Blu-Ray movies to date

Has anyone ever truly sat down to count the $$$ spent on your movie collection? I know it's not a fun subject for most folks probably, but have you ever wondered what you could've done with the money instead?

I looked at my collection and I had spent $7,350 over the last 9 years collecting movies. To recoup some of it, I sold 40+ steelbooks in my collection (including the entire Marvel Phase 1 collection I had gotten from all over the world, and the FutureShop exclusive Harry Potter set with steel case)

I realized that I really need to stop buying movies, especially expensive ones. So once I realized how much I had spent I set ground rules which I am proud to say I have followed closely and strongly:

Since Jan 2015:

1) Now I only buy movies once they're $11.99 or lower
2) No more double dips, ever. Not even buying re-releases on 4k (and I have a 4k player)
3) Steelbooks only for US releases, for movies I have not seen and IF they're the spectacle type movies [superheroes, sci-fi, fantasy etc) and if they're under $30 (including tax).
4) Not buying 3D + 4K releases separately. I choose 3D over 4K any day
5) No imports any more, they get super expensive

I realized that movies just sit there and no one else except for me gives a damn about them. I have started to invest my money elsewhere, where it can grow and maybe down the line allow me to buy a 4k laser projector for my future HT. That would be supreme.

I really want people to just think for a moment on how they're spending their money and would they rather invest it elsewhere where it helps?

It would be cool if there was a feature on collections here that calculated cost/worth of your collection based on current Amazon pricing or something.

Yeah, I've been trying to figure that out with my DVDProfiler software. Still won't be accurate, since some prices I neglected to input, and most of my movies are now combinations of editions in one (so the price per movie goes up).

Still, I reckon I'm well over $40K at this point, after about 9 years of frequent buying.

Recent issues make it so that I won't be spending much on movies anytime soon, and I will be dialing it back a lot from here on out.

$8 a title is usually my sweet spot when deciding what to buy casually. I figure between spending less per title with multipacks and spending more on niche horror I probably average out to about $8 a title spent, so around $8500 total since I started buying blu in 2011. Considering it's really the only thing I like to consistently use my allotted spending money on I am completely comfortable with that amount.

True dat.

I could've spent that Rick Ross money on strippers and booze.

Instead here I'm typing these meaningless words while sipping on hot cocoa. #FML

I don't think current Amazon pricing is an apples to apples comparison (but I get it, it'll show you the current worth of your collection).

The main reason of this post is to get you to think about it. Maybe it will open up your eyes to the true cost of this hobby.

I started recording prices on site in 2012 but started buying Blu Rays in 2007. On site I have just under $6000 recorded so I'm firmly between 5000 and 10,000 and this point.

Thousands of dollars. If I had to guesstimate, around 6. At least.
I no longer buy new releases unless they're the BD+DVD+Digital for $19.99 or less and $12.99 if it's just BD+Digital. My blind buying is pretty much non-existent now as well. I recently paid off my credit card debt and am now much more mindful of my spending. Not going into the debt machine ever again.

I don't like to think about it, but it makes me happy and that's how I justify it. If I can't afford to do it in the future, then I will just stop, but until that day comes, I will continue to collect.

I feel zero guilt over the money I've pumped into my hobbies. It's something I want to do and it brings me joy, so what's the problem? If there were other things I wanted, or more importantly needed to use that money for but chose not to then that might be an issue, but there aren't.

Because i always add prices in another database, and it gives me a total price of my collection, i know exactly how much i have spent. I won't tell it here though as everyone would think i am insane, and is probably right.
However, when i decided to sell parts of my collection in the past, to get funds for something else, i usually got 20-25% more than what i paid for it. So if i chose to quit collecting and sell my collection one by one, at the right time, i am pretty sure i'd get almost all my money back. Which i don't plan to do of course. 😃
My collection is really a childhood's dream come true. You cannot outweigh that in money.

How far back are we talking? Just on Blu? Not all that much. My entire history of buying media? Thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands.

My VHS anime buying was crazy expensive. My import anime LDs from Japan? Even worse. You think all those CAV lasers from Criterion were cheap? Hell no. And then you add in the DVDs I've picked up over the years - hell, just my entire run of Doctor Who alone is stupid expensive.

So in my entire life, I'm WELL over 20 large

My collection is pretty darn big. I don't know how much I've spent, and I think I would enjoy my movies a lot less if I knew.

To sort of keep things in line, I rarely buy new releases on release day, I buy used whenever I can and watch for sales on the stuff I can't buy used.

Twilight Time titles kill me, though. But they've got what I need so what are you going to do?

I've probably spent somewhere in the neighborhood of 30K to 35K on Blu-rays over the past five years.

I currently own 2115 movies on Blu-ray, with the majority of them costing less than $10 apiece, either because I bought them on sale or because of many of these movies are together in box sets that were bought for economical prices. The more expensive Twilight Time/Criterion/Scorpion/Code Red purchases spike up the total, though.

It's a lot of money, but my Blu-rays have been worth every penny.

My Blu-ray collecting habit has basically amounted to an additional vehicle payment every month, but these movies take me places where my truck cannot take me.
