That was incredibly stupid and a very big FUBAR on Jackson's part. Not to mention the showdown with Gandalf and the Witch King.

Three that I know of: Theatrical, Extended, and the Theatrical/Extended seamless branching combo re-release. The original extended release is the best IMO, as the re-release doesn't have any of the original comprehensive special features, it just has a documentary made just for the re-release.

The Witch King also looked pretty pathetic. There was no particular reason as to why he didn't just finish Gandalf then and there. |

The witch king was pulled away by something that was happening at that moment, can't remember exactly. But as already stated that part wasn't even in the book it was just placed there by PJ for tension. So, really he could do whatever he wanted with the scene cause it was his creativity anyways. This trilogy, of course, is unfilmable the way it was written by Tolkien. To make it work smoothly he made additions to help keep the story moving, such as the Gandlaf/Witch King stand-off to show that "Hey, men COULD be defeated." The most important aspect of this film that none of us should forget is that the MOST care was taken possible to make this film true to the book in one man's vision, Frodo and the ring. We all have different visions and there will be some things we may never agree on. Personally, I think he did a better authentic job showing tolkiens story than anyone else could have.

In answer to why the witch king left Gandalf Rohan had arrived on the battlefield. He heard the horns of the Rohirrim and subsequently responded to this more immediate threat to his siege.

Okay. If it were me, I'd take out the more powerful guy while I had him, and THEN go to face rohan.
