i was surprised how much i liked Everybody wants some. the movie falls apart when hes trying to get the girl and the play scene. the first half truly is a spiritual sequel to Dazed.

Everybody Wants Some!! is a quality flick. When most people think of the 1980s, they remember parachute pants, small cars, synth-pop music, and MTV, but few films shed a light on that short transitional time window of 1980, between the 1970s rock/disco/punk era and the colorful "big '80s" vibe that showed up a few years later. 1980 was a time of big automobiles, tight T-shirts on guys, long hair, and a few holdover hippie types. The 1982 film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, depicts a similar world, and this movie has the same sort of fun spirit

I looked at the EWS soundtrack first. All subjective, of course, but that line-up doesn't blow me away. Then I looked at the D&C soundtrack and that one kinda stinks, too, although not as much as the soundtrack to The Big Chill - ("oh boy, remember the time we loved these run of the mill mainstream duds?!")

but I digress... EWS has Pink Floyd's Fearless, which is like the greatest song ever, so that gets my vote.

Hoke & owl: I totally agree on I Vitelloni. It is brilliant; a natural bookend to Roma. I avoided IV for decades, mistakenly thinking it was "neo-realist". Then, I watched it after purchasing the recent Criterion release of Roma, and realized how wrong I was. It is right up there with Amarcord. One of the artists interviewed on the doc included on the Criterion dvd of IV notes: Fellini steps on the train in IV, and gets off it 20 years later in Roma (or something to that affect. Those who've seen both films will know what I mean). At any rate, don't underestimate FF's early films like I did: all his films are magic. Period.

On another note, owl, I just returned from a visit to Atlanta (Duluth, Buckhead area?) after a 50 year break (am now a Wisconsin transplant). What a change. ATL is not the same place I saw back in 1966. I'm a NYC native, and am used to gridlock. But I haven't seen traffic like this since maybe Boston in the early 70s. So when I heard about the I85 bridge burn, all I can say is:WOW! I really sympathize with what you guys are going through. It will be a long, hot summer. Hang in there!

Interesting. They seem to be releasing just about all of Sirk's 50s films, including Magnificent Obsession, Captain Lightfoot and Interlude just this week. If they're all region-A compatible, I may be tempted to get my Sirk on through them.

Criterion tweeted a shot from Written on the Wind a few months ago, but I think that's the only nod to any Sirk they've made of late. I got chance to see a 35mm print of Written... recently, so now I'm hoping for a Magnificent Obsession upgrade more, as that's the only major Sirk I haven't seen yet. If the Elephant Blu drops in price some, I may just spring for it.

And then I'm hoping for a nice Eclipse box set of some lesser-known Sirk films, and that the local art house books the Sirk retrospective that was in New York in 2015 and Berlin last Summer, so I can see everything else

Traffic is at its worst in Atlanta right now, because of the I-85 bridge collapse that only happened less than a week ago. Thankfully, I live on the other end of metro Atlanta from all of that foolishness (I'm in Kennesaw, GA.).

I'll be brushing shoulders with traffic resulting from the Atlanta Braves games soon, though, since the brand new stadium is located on the south end of my county. Whoever heard of a major league baseball team stadium being located in an area inaccessible by the local subway system? Even for a city that is known for making horrible, horrible decisions, the new Braves stadium location is a cognitive low point for Atlanta.

If a bunch of high school kids were doing dumb shit on my front lawn it would be immediately irritating and I'd want them to leave. I didn't find it to be any more appealing when it was on my television.

Get off my lawn, basically. For 2 hours.

(It should be noted that the kind of dumb shit i did at that age was completely different from the dumb shit in the movie, so I also have zero nostalgic memories to help me enjoy the film.)

I'm pretty sure I live in the Dyngus Day capital of America. Everyone's welcome to come down/up/over/however you relate geographically to Buffalo NY.

I know that this movie is being discussed at detail on about a million other threads here on this site right now, but I'm going to pitch a recommendation for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story based on the fact that it combines the essence of three Criterion titles in its narrative.

There's a lot of Army of Shadows here, especially with the darker parallels of the Rebellion to the French Resistance during World War II.

There's a major character who is quite obviously based on Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman.

Finally, the whole setup has a distinct Seven Samurai vibe to it.

I'll leave it at that, since this is all of the Criterion-related goodness that I have to share, but, if you have not seen this one, then you may find a lot to appreciate, even if you are not a Star Wars fan.

I love it when popular contemporary films take cues from classic foreign cinema, and then run the ball into the end zone.

Saw DAVID LYNCH: THE ART LIFE today.

Really enjoyed this extended interview/art gallery. Found the big screen really enhanced the textures and scope of some of his art work, and the stories he tells are endlessly fascinating. Another friend of mine said watching this film was "like mediating," and I can see what he means. It's actually fairly calming, watching Lynch work and hearing him speak. I doubt I would pick up this disc having seen the film once, though.

I'm wondering what Criterion will do with this release. I think it'll get its own spine (in the same vein as the Ingrid Bergman doc), but I think it would behoove Criterion to include the short films once again as the film immediately references and shows clips from them. In fact, the only one of Lynch's films that is given any type of background is ERASERHEAD (in hindsight, this film would have made a great supplement on that release). It ends right after he completes that film.

If the DumbLand shorts get put on this disc, I would absolutely buy it, though.

I felt that the metro never went to Turner Stadium. You had to then hop on a bus from the train.. I always paid for the parking. New stadium in Cobb or Marietta? Haven't lived there in 4 years but my traffic experience wasn't too bad as I had off rush hour work transit times.... to keep this Criterion related, I cant wait to watch Mildred Pierce tomorrow.... it's still in the wrapping

It is my favourite Lynch film too! Incredible performance from Laura Dern.

It has a really good story and when you dissect it and really analyse it that is when it becomes even better :P I love it and can't fault it!

And I just adore the haunting soundtrack

I commute from Alpharetta downtown for work every day, and it would be an absolute nightmare, but I work overnights presently, so the 85 bridge fiasco has only added about 25 minutes to my commute, each way.

Not fun, but survivable. I can't even imagine driving in during the day.

Just rewatched Le Rayon Vert, and wow, what a beautiful film! It would make a perfect Criterion release - not sure if that's possible, though.

If you ask me, Laura Dern is sadly overlooked when really great actresses are discussed. I've always liked her. She's a real student of the craft, and has some real range. It's not surprising, knowing her biggest influence is Barbara Stanwyck.

While the possibility remains that you're joking about this film, too, I would definitely be down for a Fast Times at Ridgemont High release by Criterion. First of all, the importance of the film as a definitive "coming of age" snapshot for the early 1980s cannot be overstated. I watch it, and feel instantly transported back to 1982. I was only 11, but the era hung around long enough for me to experience the same kind of thing when I was 16/17 in 1987/88. It was a special, more innocent time.

Plus, there's the early glimpse the exercise provides of some really great acting careers in the making: Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Forrest Whitaker, Nicolas Cage (albeit a very small role for Mr. Coppola). Eric Stoltz is good, too, and Anthony Edwards. And Vincent Schiavelli is one of my favorite character actors, going back to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
