Default Marvel's New Warriors - Squirrel Girl Headed to TV

Quote:
This is nuts: Marvel and ABC Studios are developing a New Warriors comedy series that would put the spotlight on little-known comic book heroine Squirrel Girl, TVLine has learned exclusively. Both Marvel and ABC Studios declined to comment, but sources confirm that the half-hour project is currently being shopped around to cable and streaming outlets.

Described as the junior version of The Avengers, the New Warriors are a superhero squad made up of teenagers, one of whom would include Doreen Green (aka Squirrel Girl). For the record, SG can do more than just communicate with the world’s vast squirrel population; she also possesses super-speed and strength.

Squirrel Girl — who in the comics would go on to serve as the nanny to Luke Cage and Jessica Jones’ daughter — made headlines recently when Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick expressed a desire to play the cheeky character on the big screen, telling Net A Porter, “My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should. I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!” (Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo in turn said Kendrick would be “perfect casting.”)

Anna Kendrick didn't really say she wanted to play her... that's just people having her say what they want lol I think it was more along the lines of somebody said she should and brought it up to her, her brother I think? So she was like I don't know who she is but alright. It's been a couple months so I don't remember

If she goes to tv, they might eventually cross her over to Netflix, since she's nanny to Jessica Jones and Luke Cage's kid

Squirrel Girl better not be played by Barb from Stranger Things, I don't want to see her big ole butt in the squirrel outfit!

This has been ordered directly to series. 10 episode season on ABC's freeform platform.

The fact that it's going to Freeform seems to suggest that Marvel learned from the failure of Powerless (though I think NBC's more to blame, they've never really seemed to get comic book characters the way they got Grimm and Hannibal). Of course, Freeform's idea of a exec-friendly comedy is more Melissa and Joey than The Middleman.

As for a lead, Aubrey Plaza's probably looking for work (though she's high in demand in film, none of her films have made money) but she'd probably be too expensive for Freeform (she did do that Lifetime movie though).

Aubrey Plaza has Legion though. I don't think putting it on a the teen sister channel to ABC is exactly learning from NBC and Powerless, I would think Freeform is a harder sale for most people.

Freeform product sticks around for longer (look at Baby Daddy, does anyone watch this show?) and putting harder-to-sell series (such as superhero sitcoms) on cable allows them to thrive.

Powerless was simply too strange for a Big Four network (the reception didn't help but you've seen badly reviewed shows do well on cable). Squirrel Girl would have been too odd for ABC (especially since ABC likes traditional shows, see The Middle and The Goldbergs) and after the initial buzz, would have declined fast (see Agent Carter, which did well as a short run series but couldn't sustain the momentum once it became a regular series).

As for Plaza, doing an MCU series and an X-Men-themed series would not be unusual (especially since both would likely air at different times). A few years back, Hiroyuki Sanada was doing two shows in the same season (and he was also doing movies as well). Plaza's film career hasn't really taken off (and I don't think her two summer films will make a dent) so I think her schedule could be worked out.

New Warriors? Why not The Great Lakes Avengers?
One of the most current Squirrel Girl artists is crap with the depiction of the character and overall quality of everything.

I would have loved it to be Mae Whitman, but I have no problems with Milana getting the part. They do seem a little older than what I thought the show would be, but I have no objections, though I hadn't heard of Jeremy Tardy and Kate Comer before today. I'm not at all surprised Derek Theler is in it though since he was in Freeform's Baby Daddy and they just cancelled it recently.

I wonder how they'll work out Matthew Moy being Jeremy Tardy's adopted son though, not sure how old Jeremy Tardy is but he doesn't look like he could even play Matthew Moy's adopted dad... but they might just ignore that relationship all together.

I hope the show opens with Squirrel Girl working at an AT&T store.

Can someone explain to me the fascination with Squirrel Girl? I've been a Marvel Comics fan for a LONG time now and have never understood this.

I read a few Squirrel Girl issues. It was sort of funny, but she's a pretty dumb character. I think younger people like her though.

She is very...particular. In the logic of Marvel Comics, she is secretly one of the most powerful characters ever written, having beaten the likes of Thanos, MODOK (semantics on the .'s), Doctor Doom, and so on.
