Default Misses the 3D mark like a stormtrooper

2D graphics and audio are wonderful. Just like in my IMAX 3D viewing, however, there was noticeable ghosting in the 3D. This was particular obvious in the beginning with the stormtroopers standing behind Krennic. Except for the Scarif battle scenes and a few space scenes, the 3D did not add anything to the 2D viewing experience.

. I have been saying for years that one day we will see brand new movies in the future starring actors who are long gone. I was drawn into the many references that came directly from the main saga movies that are incorporated into Rogue One, including seeing some peripheral characters from the main saga. K-2SO is yet another fascinating droid and I thought he was fantastic, as are all of the ships and other Star Wars tech.

I'll be watching Rogue One 3D several times again over the coming weeks. Sadly, this movie can never have a sequel. It's a one timer and, again, I have to repeat it is extremely well done. No disappointments at all.

I'm not really a Star Wars fan though so that's probably a key factor in my enjoyment of these movies. I thought Force Awakens was pretty mediocre. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy science fiction visuals and sci fi action scenes and I love 3D of course, I was just not very invested in any of the story or characters. I actually thought the characters were really bland in Rogue One. At least there was lots of exciting action in the last 30 minutes.

I thought the CG recreations of Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher were not that great. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty much state of the art CG but it clearly looks very, very artificial still. The tech just isn't there. It wasn't there when they made Tron Legacy and it still isn't there now. That said I thought the CG 1984 Terminator from Terminator Genisys was a far more convincing digital human.

I'm not saying I thought Rogue One was a bad movie, just an average one. If you're a fan of the Star Wars universe I can imagine it being one of the best things ever, however if you're not it just is what it is. Fan service. Force Awakens just felt like a remake of A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back and Rogue One just treads water filling in details that we don't really need. It would interesting to see the franchise move forward and start news stories with new characters but Disney are too afraid to do that.

The 3D presentation was quite tame, IMO, and I'm not a pop-out junkie. TFA was definitely superior.

I thought the 3d was pretty good on this. It wasn't the best ever, nor the worst. I thought mid-level depth was great. Don't hesitate to get the 3d.

Ghosting is entirely your display device failing to render the image correctly. On a dlp, or a vr headset there will be zero ghosting as it is a display related issue, not a source one. Beyond the above mentioned display types, black on white is incredibly hard to achieve without ghosting.

Had the same issue in the theater and don't have it on most 3D titles. While it may be true that some display types are more prone to ghosting, the fact is that this was poorly rendered to have so much of it at such an obvious level.

The only fact you have stated is that it is the displays fault. Zero ghosting on my dlp in any scene of this film. I was not a big fan of this film, but of it's many faults, this is not one of them.

Fact: There was obvious ghosting when I watched this at the theater in IMAX 3D. Two friends also said they encountered the same issue.

Fact: I have encountered very little ghosting in other 3D movies on my display.

Fact: The ghosting was very pronounced on this title in certain scenes.

Logical conclusion: The rendering was not done to the same quality as most other 3D titles in my collection.

Whether other display types exhibit any ghosting or ghosting to the same level does not necessarily mean the movie was rendered well. It just means that poor rendering will be more obvious on my display type than yours.

Make sure you check out the LG Depth thread to fine tune your 3D experience.

There's a handy chart that lays it out very nicely. Think I'm using -2/+14 for modest boost.

I just watched about half of the movie last night (early morning work, so couldn't watch it all). I don't quite agree with the 3D review posted; I thought the 3D was quite good. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5. Not too much pop-out effects, but there was still plenty of depth throughout the movie.

There definitely were a few missed opportunities for pop-out, like star destroyers coming out at the screen, like in TFA, but there still was depth in those scenes.

I'm still certainly glad I picked up the 3D version!

You are simply mistaken. Just because it is more demanding of your display does not mean the source is at fault. It is a display related fault, which means it is your display. They put stark black on white which your display and apparently your imax has issues with. That doesn't make it the films fault, it is literally the displays you viewed this on failing to resolve the images as intended and present in the source.

The issue is not the sources fault, and that will not change no matter how many times you claim what you say is fact. The logical conclusion is your display has issues with 3d at times and this is a particular title that your display struggles and seemingly fails to display as is present in the source. It's not the end of the world, but it is the displays fault, your logical conclusion is a fallacy.

I thought the 3D was a solid 4 out of 5. Much much better than when I saw it recently about 5 weeks ago at the Cinemark right before it left theaters.

Above expectations.

I mostly agree with this site's 3D review for Rogue One. They played it very safe with the 3D conversion and there are only a handful of memorable 3D moments that stand out to me:
[Show spoiler]the scenes at Eadu with rain falling; some exterior shots of ships as they enter hyperspace; the inside of the data vault; and a few others.
Depth is fairly solid throughout, but certainly not as good as The Force Awakens. 3D will still be my preferred format for this movie, but I wish they would have taken a few more creative risks.

Regarding ghosting: the only time I noticed it was when
[Show spoiler]Darth Vader first appears
. His black cape against the bright white background just did not work well on my OLED TV.

I watched Rogue One 3D and the home experience was more consistently enjoyable than the IMAX version. There was some depth ghosting, more so than The Force Awakens 3D. Still worth your moola.

My copy is due to come in today but reading on another site a lot are saying the 3d does not look very good with mild 3d. I def will have to check it out tonight.

I tried adjusting the depth on my LG and it just caused real problems at the right and left of the frame.

If it was anything like my theatrical experience the 3D was poorly used throughout.

I passed on the 3D version as well. I think 3D is fantastic for movies that really utilize it creatively, like Dr. Strange. But even if people are saying the 3D really "isn't that bad," to me if the film doesn't feel like it was shot with 3D in mind, or the conversion feels like kind of an after-thought, then I'd just assume watch it in 2D, as I feel like this is the intended way to see the film.
