Default Movie Ticket Prices Hit Record High

Average movie ticket prices jumped by 3 percent in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the same period a year ago.

Not to mention the price of Concession food. If theaters start charging by the row/sections like what concert halls do, then it's gonna be crazy to go to the movies.

Thank goodness our local theater chain still has $5 Tuesdays (and a small popcorn is like $2).

The sad thing is, I'd probably still think it's a deal.

I think it used to be $4. Prices do just creep up and up all the time.

mine just jumped from $5 to $6, still affordable of course and it's a very nice theater with reclining leather seats, big screens in all rooms, etc...

but yeah, going to the movies has gotten a lot more expensive this last decade....

$13.50 in Toronto.
Still $10 in more rural areas though.

Preposterous. Plus a lot more theatres are licensed now, and so while I have no trouble saying "no" to a $8 popcorn, it's much more difficult to say no to a $9 beer.

It winds up being a fairly expensive night on the ond hand, but, on the other hand, two hours in a bar can easily hit a lot more so there's that.

I just thank god for the "Movie Cash" thread in the deals section...the combination of that plus theater gift cards I receive for birthdays and Christmas means I can't remember the last time I paid full price for a movie ticket. If I had to pay full price on top of train fees to get there, I'd probably see less than 20 movies per year in a theater.

Is this really that common, I never pay more than $5.50 at a Cinemark outside of major cities. At AMC the tickets have always been overpriced.

In Barbados, my local theatre still has the same prices. Obviously, it's more here than in the US.

2D Child- $9.00
2D Adult - $16.00
3D Child- $13.00
3D Adult - $21.00

My usual theater (Showcase Cinemas) is $10.75 for an afternoon matinee, and "only" $8.50 for bargain Tuesdays. I don't think they've sold tickets for under $10 since 2011.

Same here, I only go on $5 Tuesdays anymore, but I suspect the price will go up this year probably.

I'm sick of everything going up all the time - I had 4 monthly bills get raised this month. My pay stayed the same.

Or things get smaller. I bought toilet paper this week at Costco. They "reshaped" the giant Charmin package yet it still has 36 rolls. But lo and behold! I get home and look at the old package, and yep - they made the rolls in the new one with 13 less sheets. So 13 X 36 = 468 sheets. They cut 2.14 rolls out of the package, and the price went up a little. **** off!

Where's Ray been? He'd feel my pain...

This is nothing new, and I'm surprised people always complain about it. For much of their history, movie theaters have relied on their concessions to survive. The studios get the bulk of ticket sales every year, so the food remains the main source of income for every theater.

I remember as a kid in the late '80s, my local 2-screen theater showed first-run movies for $5 or less...and it still exists that way. Many of my childhood faves were first seen there: Oliver & Company, The Little Mermaid, Back to the Future Part II, The Rocketeer... so many memories...

Can't believe that place wasn't turned into an adult video store in the 90s.

You should be THANKFUL for those concession prices AND the people willing to pay them. Without both of those things, commercial theatres would go out of business REAL fast! Studios have long since strong armed theatres into giving them nearly every penny from ticket sales. Summer blockbusters are particularly bad for this where studios demand 100% of ticket revenue for the first month (or more) of the theatrical runs of their films... or else the theatre won't get to show the film at all. Concession is 90% or more of the theatre revenue stream these days.

Ignorance, in this case, is NOT bliss.
