My question is then if he wants a 4K HDR release why did he not shoot totally in 4K and have no upscaling.
According to IMDB this was shot with the Red Weapon in 8K resolution and had a 4K intermediate. No other cameras are mentioned, but maybe they also used some lower res ones too? It's weird how he would mention that scenes were shot in 'both 2K and 4K' and not mention 8K though. Maybe he was referring to the DCPs and not the actual resolution the movie was shot in?

4K Dolby Vision UHD blu-ray Please for Guardians 2 would be nice.
James Gunn shot this with the Red Weapon Dragon, that has an 8K VistaVision-like sensor. Capable of shooting up to 8K.

It is also possible that he require a smaller camera for some stunt or effects work, and it's limited to 2K.

If IMDb information is accurate, this movie had a 4K DI.

... but a lot of vfx shots, likely finished at 2K. So, between those and whatever was shot at 2K, there would probably be a substantial amount of up-scaling going on, despite a 4K DI.

The 2K VFX argument applies to pretty much every movie, regardless of DI. Movies like Revenant and Martian have 4K DIs and the VFX still look great (others like X-Men Apoc and ID:R show the seams of their VFX a bit more, but overall still look really good).

I remember when James Gunn first hinted at this months ago. Back then I speculated that GOTG vol 2 would be the first 4K Disney disk, but people jumped down my throat and claimed his initial comment on twitter was meaningless. People thought he was just talking about the possibility of Disney releasing it possibly someday many years from now. I'm happy they were wrong.

My point, though, is that it has a much more significant impact with a big modern summer blockbuster. There could be a good thousand rendered CGI shots in this movie, so a much larger percentage of that "4K DI" may be made up of up-scaled 2K assets than you might get with a less fx-driven movie.

Sounds more like he is pushing for it to be a Disney 4K launch title whenever that is rather than it coming out in 4K at the same time as the BD/3D.

Right in the video he clearly says he is talking with Disney to get Guardians of the Galaxy 2 released on UHD Blu-Ray w/ Dolby Vision as part of the movie's initial home video release slate. He may not be successful, but he is genuinely attempting to have it released on the same day as the BD/3D/DVD. Hopefully Disney won't let him (and all of us) down.

Default Disney's on my grump list right now

I know how it works and how they wait as with other formats, but it still kinda sucks that they haven't even announced anything yet, despite Universal moving forward with Dolby Vision support.

Every time I watch the Blu-ray of Rogue One and marvel at its dazzling PQ I think to myself, shame Disney, I could be enjoying this on another level in full UHD. But nope. They can't even bother to release any titles with Dolby Atmos/DTS:X on their blu ray releases! Oh well.....eventually folks. We just need the patience.

For Guardians, the original was a stunning visual feast and the trailers for this new one look incredible; a UHD release no doubt would be a stunner of a presentation. At this point, the most I would say is POSSIBLY seeing Disney's first UHD release by December 2017 but I'm not counting on anything.

If GOTG vol 2 is the first Disney UHD BD disk it'll end up released in August or September. So Q3 2017 is very likely when we will see Disney release it's first 4K Blu-Rays. The fact that many of them will also come with Dolby Vision should really help to continue to proliferate the premium Dolby Vision HDR format, which is also really cool.

James Gunn is putting Disney on the spot with his remarks. Fans will now be upset at Disney if they continue to spurn UHD past the home video release date of GOTG vol. 2. He has effectively drawn a line in the sand, I'm thankful he is so passionate about providing fans with the optimal home viewing experience. If only Lionsgate would have taken La La Land's home 4K release as seriously. The constant flow of 2K upscales sans Dolby Vision is getting tiresome. I want more! Hats off to Mr. Gunn. Dude is a legend.

But its not the standard yet. There is 10 bit, 10 bit +, technicolor HDR, Dolby Vision... and not all players and tvs support it. Disney could be waiting to see whether Dolby Vision becomes the standard.

HDR10 is the standard, everything else is optional. If they want it to become more popular, they need to do their part and release discs.

You're right that HDR10 is the current standard base layer HDR format, per the BDA's official UHD Blu-Ray spec. However, it is expected that the BDA will soon update the UHD spec to include HDR-10+ as a supported HDR format. The only thing that is murky at this point is if HDR-10+ will become the new base layer HDR format for UHD moving forward sometime next year, replacing HDR10 as the new base layer HDR format, while remaining backward compatible with static HDR tvs, or if it will be a second layer only format like the premium Dolby Vision or Technicolor HDR formats which are still secretive but indeed forthcoming.

In any case, it's going to mean a lot more disks with at least some type of dynamic metadata HDR. I expect it to become a ubiquitous HDR format on UHD BD, and I believe it'll likely become the new standard base layer, and yet still allow the potential for DV or Technicolor HDR on the same disk. Because HDR10+ is meant as the successor to HDR-10 and because it's open source, this is going to be huge. Certainly 20th Century Fox will heavily support it, since they co-developed it.

You're 100% right that Dolby Vision and forthcoming Technicolor/Philips HDR formats have no chance at becoming a standard base layer HDR format, as they charge royalty fees, they must be optional. It's unlikely any studios will ever release all movies with a second layer DV encode, but if anyone would do it more often than not, it's probably Disney.

The big question would be is it possible to have both hdr10+ and Dolby Vision on the same disc, since they are both dynamic Metadata. If the answer is no, then it means 2 things: 1. The bda won't make hdr10+ a requirement. 2. They do make hdr10+ the new standard, which essentially kills the possibility of Dolby Vision being put on any disc moving forward from that point.
