1080P is definitly an improvement but alot of it is screen size dependent. I only own a 32" lcd (still in school and broke) and its the Samsung A330 which is 720p, I've seen 32" sharps that are 1080P and the difference on that smal la screen is negligible. The larger you get the more important 1080p becomes and I highly reccommend it for anyone going 40+

From how far away?

People need to consider viewing distance when trying to comment on HD displays.
This 17" display at 10 feet is like a postcard. No sh** you won't be able to tell the difference in PQ. DUH!

Other end of that spectrum, get a 72" 1080p display and view it from 2 feet - all you will see is a bunch of colored squares.

1920x1080 is 1920x1080. Bigger or smaller pixels, but they are all still there dot for dot.

BTBucks "screen door effect" comment is the type of feedback I'd like to see. I too have a 720p screen and just by looking at the numbers, I know a 1080p screen will look crisper and sharper. However, what I want to know is what is the difference in the real world? How much sharper is it really? Are people bleeding from the eyes it is so much sharper than a 720p picture?

FendersRule comment also made me think. I don't have a PS3 but from what I understand, HD broadcast channels do not broadcast at 1080p either. All are either 720p or 1080i (which my screen can also handle). So is the purpose of getting a 1080p screen is to scale up the 720p to 1080p and de-interlace the 1080i or just for the benefit of blu-rays and and up-converted DVD's?

I look at the 720p and 1080p screens playing next to each other at the local best buy or circuit city and they just don't look like a difference worth shelling out another 700 to 1500 or so from my pocket.

By the way, I am not trying to dampen anyone's spirit on 1080p. It is definitely better, I know that. I just want to know what the specific differences are that people notice from one to the other that I don't know about or understand. Thanks.
Keep in mind, that stores like best buy or circuit city run the tv's in torch mode. Once the sets are set up correctly, there might be a noticeable difference.

The question about 720p/1080p is hard to answer. If you are sitting quite far back from your tv, 720p might be sufficient. As a rough guideline, this
http://www.carltonbale.com/2006/11/1080p-does-matter/
could help you decide if you are in the sweet spot for a 1080p set or a 720p set. However, it also depends on your eyesight.

Keep in mind, that resolution isn't the only thing that defines a good display. On a tight budget, it might be better to get a great 720p set than only a decent 1080p set.

you can say 1080p is more than twice as clear as 720p.
but will you notice it with your viewing distance and screen size?

I have a 42" 720p Vizio plasma, as well as a 56" 108p Samsung DLP. I don't see the difference, to be quite honest. I actually prefer the 720 plasma to be quite honest. So, for ME, the difference is not enough to get worked up over.

Well since 1080 is 50% more than 720, I'd say 50% better

For about a week I was playing at 720p until I finally decided to only set my PS3 video at 1080p. The difference was huge for me, it was more crisp, especially looking at the opponents at further distances; I was getting more headshots from across the maps.
This does not change the fact that it is rendered in 640p.

It depends more on the quality of the HDTV rather than if its 720p or 1080p. My 720p Panasonic takes the "cake" over many 1080p HDTV's out there. It also depends on how far you sit from your set & what size it is, theres lots of things that come it to play. We all know 1080p is better, it just depends...

I remember reading some "Battle of the TVs" article a while back and a 720p won.

I agree with the previous poster about a top of the line 720p vs a medium level 1080p. I'm blown away by my 50" plasma panny TH-50PX75U and how awesome blu-rays look on it compared to my neighbors 1080p sets. I know that 1080p sets do look "better" but really how much? Eventually I will upgrade sets, but right now I have one heck of a set and I'm extremely satisfied-isn't that what its all about anyway?

I have a 42" 720p LG and am very pleased with it. Comparisons in-store and online reviews before purchase led me to not spend the extra $ on something I couldnt tell the difference on.

It does if you already have a 720p capable TV and you are getting a new one that is 1080p capable.
