This may be random, but I'm still holding out hope for a CC release of Arsenic and Old Lace. I know some used the bottle with the XX on it in the Criterion drawing from January. I also found out that Criterion released it on laserdisc way back when. So I guess the hope can stick around. Thoughts?

Or you can pick it up at zavvi for £25. Which is probably what you'll pay for the CC version of FWWM - if it happens
But ther have been 2 versions released so this might not have the fancy packaging

Has Criterion released any films that are truly 4K? Or maybe even just an upscale to 4K?

They master a lot of films in 4k and then compressed them to 1080p. That means their downscaled, but still very beautiful.

So the answer is no.

The "Twin Peaks" box set is probably one of the top five most elaborate packages in my entire collection. It's just awesome and the PQ/AQ is top-notch. I've been buying Criterion discs for 15 or 16 years, but I can't imagine a scenario where one would deem it necessary to buy a Criterion edition of anything "Twin Peaks"-related if you already own the box set.

I'm a 80s kid that grew up in the 90s, and I've always heard of this show but never watched it, until recently. For about the first ten or twelve episodes I was hooked but then it got stale. MacLachlan is a stud and I love Sherilyn Fenn's character, but even with the characters I'm bored. I gotta finish it though cause I wanna watch that Fire Walk With Me.

Just to get up to speed, watch the first 10 episodes of S2, skip 11-20 (or 12-20 if you wanna meet David Duchovny's returning minor character) and read summaries of them, and watch the last two episodes and FWwM. If you really like FWwM, watch The Missing Pieces. And then if you're hooked and want to know more about the mythology of the show, go back and suffer through 11-20.

Lol. I might just try that, thanks. Yeah I made it to like the second or third episode with Duchovny. I'm not really sure what number episode that is.

I've been wanting to watch the Twin Peaks series but after all of the negative reception I've heard over the years I think I'll just pass lol.

I said ten or twelve episodes in my earlier post, but it was definitely at least 16 episodes. Anyways, it's pretty bad ass up until that point for me. (When I went into this I thought Lynch wrote and directed everything.)

Negative? I think you'll find the postive FAR outweighs whatever negative there is

Yeah I've heard it takes a major dive in it's last couple seasons or something like that which is one of the reasons Lynch did the film was due to the negative reception....atleast from what I heard.

On another topic I just read your post on the It Follows thread about Carnival of Souls and since we're on the Criterion thread I find it fitting to agree completely with you. That was a trippy horror film with some great eerie moments. It was a blind buy for me and a very good one.

I've just heard that the show is very strong in the beginning but then gets a very polarizing reaction as it goes on. I guess I should just watch it for myself and make up my own mind.

One thing that the Entire Mystery boxset does not have for some reason that the Gold DVD has is Kyle's appearance on SNL

If you like Carnival of Souls, check out Repulsion. That will really blow your mind.

I say that without downplaying Carnival of Souls though.

It's gold through the killer reveal which is roughly halfway through. After that it gets a lil eh with a side of identity crisis but the final episode is gold again. Highlllly suggest giving it a watch.

They need to watch Episode 13 because it's Gordon Cole's first physical appearance and he definitely a key player for FWWM and S3. Plus he's the best.

Yeah, if you made it that far, just refresh your memory—several explainers have been making the rounds in anticipation, so just look around (the NYTimes one was pretty good)—and watch the last two episodes and FWwM and you'll be good to go.

Season 1 is great, the first half of Season 2 is great—I think it's highs are better than S1, as it gets truly Lynchian, but it definitely has some questionable subplots—and the ending is fantastic (and it truly is unbelievable that it was shown on TV in the early 90s). I don't think you'll find anyone arguing the middle of Season 2 is worth watching for anyone but die hard fans who want to know all the ins and outs of the Twin Peaks world.

Yes, Fire Walk with Me divided people, but that's because at the time, a lot of folks were wanting Twin Peaks: Explained, and FWwM is NOT that. It does tie up a lot of loose ends and explain what happened WRT to the main story in more detail, but not so much the why or how it happened. It's a David Lynch movie, featuring the cast of Twin Peaks. It won't make any sense at all without knowing Twin Peaks, but it doesn't make much more sense than any other later David Lynch movie, other than its own internal logic. If you go in expecting a Lynch movie (and you like Lynch movies), you'll probably like it.

And if you like Lynch, the show (and movie) is definitely worth watching. If you don't like Lynch, the show ain't gonna sell you on him.

TP, in some ways, was one of those "you had to be there" kind of things. Watching it unfold week after week over those two seasons, hearing the endless speculation at work over who the killer was, what was up with the log lady, etc. it was a phenomenon never before seen on network TV, which will probably never be repeated. It galvanized the kind of tv viewers who never even heard of David Lynch, never would have gone to see Blue Velvet, and if they had, wouldn't have made it past the "daddy's coming home" scene. TP, like BV, was a "love letter straight from the heart" of DL. Here's hoping the new incarnation is even 1/10th as good as the original and generates even a hint of the buzz of that zany doughnut fest. Bring it on....
