Now available on Netflix

I just finished Series 3, and I have mixed feelings about it. First of all,
[Show spoiler]I'm not too happy they killed off Justin. Seemed extreme and unnecessary. This show isn't like 24 where you expect everyone to die. Second of all, the subplot with Mary seemed very abrupt and forced. Like they needed another weak character for Luther to care about and subsequently be in danger. I will say David O'Hara did a wonderful job as Stark, the guy trying to bring Luther down. He seemed to match up well with Elba. Too bad this was the last season. Hopefully that prequel feature film they've been talking about becomes realized.

Idris Elba Promises 'There Will Be More' Luther

Quote:
Idris Elba has some good news for all the Luther fans out there.
“It’s not over. There will be more,” the British series’ star promised TVLine’s Michael Ausiello on the Emmys red carpet Monday.

Elba’s psychological crime drama is “one of those shows that can keep going and going,” the Emmy nominee said, adding that someday he’d even like to bring the detective chief inspector to the big screen.

Really like the show but no longer love it after the weak writing of season 3.

'Luther' Revived for Two-Part BBC Mini in 2015

Quote:
BBC America has revived the drama starring Idris Elba for a two-part miniseries set to air in 2015, the network announced Wednesday.

Series creator Neil Cross, who has repeatedly said there was life left in the franchise, will write the two hourlong episodes in the mini, a co-production with BBC Drama Production and BBC America.

"Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there's hardly been a minute when I didn't wonder what happened next," Cross said. "So I decided to find out. We're putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work."

Production will begin in March in and around London for a late 2015 premiere on BBC America. Elizabeth Kilgarriff will also exec produce.

LUTHER IS RETURNING FOR ANOTHER SEASON WITH IDRIS ELBA
POSTED BY BLAIR MARNELL ON JUNE 12, 2017

Idris Elba may be in demand for feature films, but he hasn’t turned his back on television. After starring in Showtime’s Guerrilla miniseries this year, Elba has confirmed that he will return for a new round of stories about his signature character, Detective Chief Inspector John Luther.

BBC has announced that Elba and series creator Neil Cross will both return for a new four-episode season of Luther, the British crime drama that premiered in 2010. This will be the fifth season of Luther, which has been on hiatus since 2015. Within the world of the series, John Luther is a brilliant police detective who has revealed himself to be very self-destructive and obsessive. The fourth season was thought to be the end of the series, but it’s conclusion was definitely open ended.

“It’s a question Idris and I get asked a lot,” related Cross to BBC. “What happened to John Luther after we last saw him striding unbowed through the streets of his city, his blood red London? It can’t be over, can it? There’s so much we don’t know. So much unfinished business.”

Indeed. And there’s no unfinished business quite like Alice Morgan, as played by Ruth Wilson. On the series, Alice was a genius and a sociopath who shared a complicated history with John Luther. He tried and failed to prove that she murdered her parents, yet they ended up as close friends and seemed to be on the verge of forming a relationship. As revealed in the fourth season, Alice was seemingly killed off…but does anyone really believe that she’s gone for good? Since we didn’t see it happen, we’re holding out hope that she’ll be back. Of course, that will depend upon Wilson’s willingness to return.

The new season of Luther is expected to begin filming in 2018. BBC America will broadcast the series in the United States, but there is currently no premiere date.

Love Idris, but this show is nothing more than a decent time waster. The writing is mediocre and it hasn't been as entertaining since Ruth Wilson left. Her chemistry with Elba and fun character were what made this show watchable. They should have ended it with Series 3 when they ran off together.
