I wonder if both blu-rays are for extras or is one blu-ray basically the 3 cuts of the film, and the other blu-ray for the extras? Two discs of blu-ray extras sounds insane (but awesome).

For some reason this plays better with women. All the women i show this movie to get really into the family breaking down parts and therefore more invested in the ending.

Thought CE3K is my third favorite film of all time, I have to concede that the 1970s Baby Boomer ethic of absentee fathers doesn't play as easily in 2017's Gen X and Y vision of more invested fathers, so I think the movie needs as much of that "family unraveling" footage as possible to help justify/qualify, to whatever degree it can,
[Show spoiler]Roy Neary's decision to leave his family behind, possibly forever, at the end of the film

Invested how? Having him get off the planet as quick as possible? In hindsight Spielberg has stated CE3K is a film and characters he'd never write about again, as it displays a character becoming so self obsessed that in order for him to achieve fulfilment he destroys his family in the process.

I feel it's open to interpretation and varied perspective, and fervently believe that harsh judgment against Roy Neary's final choice is unfair. It could just as easily be ready as a commentary on mental illness--Roy's obsession is forced upon him, not a natural outgrowth, one must remember--and how he is abandoned by a wife who is cold and unsympathetic to his condition. There is also a brave assertion that there may be things in this Universe, conditions in the human experience, that are more important than our own nuclear family. I'm sure saying that will cause many knee-jerk dissentions, but keep military families in mind. Parents who leave their families for months, or even years, at a time for a "higher purpose". Are they to be judged harshly?

Or an allegory for depression - a literal "stop the world I want to get off"

As to parents who leave their families for 'months / years' I agree Spielberg seems to undermine that aspect but in the case of Roy his abandonment for a higher cause is pretty extreme as if to suggest he has no plans or intentions of ever returning. There are some interpretations of the inside the mother ship Roy is transformed into one of the starchild aliens himself (the shot of the capsule bursting into a fountain of light) but that is a bit extreme

I always felt the wife ditched him WAY to quickly. One moment he's looking at his sunburn, the next she's packing her bags.

It's a little less abrupt in the director's cut but, yeah, I'd like to think my wife would show a fair amount more empathy than she did; however, I try to remember that mental illness was much less understood in those days.

Nordic cover. Actually from Amazon Italy, but the age recommendation tags are from Nordic covers.

It's a pain to author and it certainly needs more bitrate, as Fox made a boo-boo when they did it with the intensely grainy 4K version of ID4 + loads of alternate language tracks stuffed onto a 66GB but that was a limitation of space, not a damning indictment of branching itself.
Not to mention DTS:X which takes up a TON of space (why Universal went lossy on F&F) - CE3K will more than likely be lossless Dolby Atmos which fits just fine.

Sony has already used BD100 anyway with Crouching Tiger.

But Universal used lossless DTS:X on the branched Huntsman movies on UHD - both of 'em - so I still don't get why they did what they did on F&F unless they actually ARE separate encodes of each movie and they had to steal space wherever possible, e.g. plain DTS 5.1 for the extended cut of F6!!! (Hasn't anyone with a UHD compatible drive actually looked at the disc structures for these two yet?)

So even then I don't think space is a major issue with lossless DTS:X itself when used as just one main track, it's just that when certain things are factored in on top that things can get dicey. Fox cramming ID4 with their usual array of chunky DTS alternative language tracks + the commentaries + branching didn't help.

But yeah: a triple-decker sandwich with Atmos audio and CE3K won't have any major compromises to make, although it will be interesting to see if they go for all three branching versions as they did on the BD.

I hope that isn't the artwork we get - it's awful. Where's the color? Why is it solid blue? The mothership is just exploding with color. And considering half the push for UHD is/should be the enhanced billion+ colors (and HDR), why did they choose an image with a complete lack of color for the artwork? Mind-boggling. I would think it should be boasting a glorious full-color image of the mothership (or the original poster art, like the original blu-ray).

The blue colour was a motif of the BD covers too. Did you moan so vehemently about those? Dude, relax. We're getting CE3K in 4K and that's all I need to know.

AND all three versions of the film on the UHD via seamless branching to boot!

I doubt there's new content but it'd be really cool if they unearthed the TV spots for this - they were super creepy as I remember

There are a ton of press release stills, lobby cards, posters that go with the blue motif. Even the UK steelbook (which I own) is similar to what the UHD cover promotes.

EDIT: it IS the UK steelbook:

Here's the theatrical one sheet I remember (the mothership's really a spoiler), pretty darn blue:

The mother ship (to an extent) and alien silhouettes took center stage on the Special Edition one sheet - talk about spoilers
