does she have the hair dryer or curling iron plugged into the same outlet cause they seem to pop breakers

It's in a dorm room, all the lights would turn off if the breaker blew..

i honestly can't think of anything but overheating. maybe the fans are broke or something?

Is it just DVD's? Tried a Blu-Ray or a game?

Check the power save settings.

Thats the only other thing I could think of, but it shouldn't be on, I never turned it on..

besides that, the lowest setting is an hour. and does that even work while a movie is playing?

well its newly purchased right? if you can't figure it out, take it back to the store for an exchange. no sense in messing with it
