I was eyeing those too but have held off. Sticking to only buying blu ray for Criterion.

Both are two of the Kurosawa films I need to get around and watch. Need to watch Kagemusha, Ran, and Red Beard.

"High and Low" is one of my top 10 favorite films. I think it's Kurosawa's best, not to take anything away from his other masterpieces, because I love those as well.

It's almost criminal that these films have yet to see a blu ray release.

Anyone watch L'Argent? Bresson's films often ruminate in the mind upon a viewing, taking a few days or even a subsequent viewing for me to formulate my thoughts. This one is no different. There's a lot to unpack, notably its conclusion, but the initial impact it has left me cannot be shaken, in ways that surprisingly aren't mirrored by his other films. The subject matter doesn't lend itself to a lasting impression the way something like Diary of a Country Priest does, but this one managed to do so. I suspect it's the sharper use in editing, and it being the first color films of his I've seen, employing the deteriorating environment of his characters as a near singular piece. Typically I've found the contrast of look in his black and white pictures - nature and the harsh confines of the interior. But it feels like every setting is worn out here, as if to say that the characters that move on a moral spectrum remain on the same playing field. The prison doors open just as the apartment's, people weave in and out of their space, only to be faced with inevitable consequences of action, even when this action isn't of their own doing.
I haven't watched my Criterion (it's in the mail), but I don't recall there being that much to unpack. It is quite a simple film. Very bleak though. Bresson's color films were more grim than his black and white ones, and you can really see Haneke's early style in late Bresson.

I just got back from the Paul McCartney concert an hour ago. McCartney opened his three-hour set with the title song from a Criterion Collection film. You have one guess...

I would suggest you get the first pressing of Vampyr. Even if Criterion put it out on blu-ray I doubt they'll still include the huge book which housed Dreyer's original script and Sheridan Le Fanu's tale Carmilla, which loosely inspired the film.

I saw the new 4K restored version at Shanghai International Film Festival, it is about 130 minutes long, longer than the previous blu-ray.

The Naked Island is excellent, a very hypnotic film that has almost no dialogue. Kaneto Shindo was an amazing Director. Kuroneko & Onibaba are great also.

I really want this one too. They interviewed Davies at some point after The Long Day Closes came out, so I'm hoping it'll happen eventually.

Oddly enough, my copy of Jeanne Dielman came with a booklet; it is pristine.

So, maybe there is hope. I much prefer the booklets, and I like them without those dents at the top and bottom.

Red Beard is a film that has the potential to change your life.

It's that moving.

...seriously.
